The Best Way to Clean a Microwave
Microwaves are one of the most frequently used appliances in the kitchen, leading to splatters and odors that can linger. A clean microwave not only looks better, it also works more efficiently and prevents the growth of bacteria. But what’s the best way to clean a microwave? Here’s a simple method that uses materials you likely have at home.
First, gather your cleaning supplies: water, vinegar, dish soap, a sponge or cloth, and a microwave-safe bowl. If you’re against using vinegar, lemon juice is a great alternative.
1. Start by mixing one cup of water with one tablespoon of vinegar in a microwave-safe bowl. If you’re using lemon juice, squeeze half a lemon into the bowl of water.
2. Place the bowl in the microwave. Turn on the microwave for five minutes or long enough for the mixture to boil and the window to steam up.
3. After the timer goes off, don’t open the microwave door right away. Let it sit for around two-three minutes so that the steam can loosen any hardened food particles.
4. Once time has passed, carefully open the door and remove the hot bowl with oven mitts.
5. Next, wipe down the inside of the microwave with a sponge or damp cloth—the grime should come off easily now.
6. If there’s still residue left behind, use a little dish soap on your sponge or cloth to scrub gently before wiping clean.
7. To clean the rubber gasket around the door, use your damp cloth without soap as it could damage the seal.
8. Finally, if you have a turntable, lift it out and wash it in the sink like any other dish.
For persistent odors or deeper cleans, sprinkle some baking soda on a damp sponge and gently scrub the inside before rinsing or wiping out with a damp cloth.
By using this method once a week or even just once a month depending on usage frequency, you can keep your microwave looking and functioning like new without much effort!
