Paul Giamatti is an actor known for his versatility and depth, enabling him to shine in a wide range of roles. A character actor at heart, he has transformed every part, whether it be supporting or leading, into something memorable. Below is a selection of some of the best Paul Giamatti movies and guidance on where you can watch them.

Sideways (2004) – Considered one of Giamatti’s signature roles, Sideways tells the story of Miles Raymond (Giamatti), a failed writer and wine aficionado who takes his soon-to-be-married friend on a trip through California’s wine country. This film earned Giamatti critical acclaim for his performance.

Where to Watch: Sideways is available for rent or purchase on various streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV, and Vudu.

Cinderella Man (2005) – In this film based on true events during the Great Depression, Giamatti plays boxing manager Joe Gould who helps James J. Braddock (played by Russell Crowe) make an incredible sports comeback.

Where to Watch: Cinderella Man can be streamed on platforms like Hulu or rented/purchased from Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, and YouTube.

American Splendor (2003) – This biographical comedy-drama portrays the life of Harvey Pekar, with Giamatti starring as the curmudgeonly comic book writer. The film blends different formats to create a unique narrative experience.

Where to Watch: American Splendor is available for digital rental or purchase on Amazon Prime Video, Apple iTunes, and Google Play.

The Illusionist (2006) – Set in turn-of-the-century Vienna, Giamatti plays Chief Inspector Uhl who becomes entangled with a magician named Eisenheim (Edward Norton), who is using his skills to woo a duchess above his social standing.

Where to Watch: The Illusionist can be watched on Netflix or rented/bought via Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV, and Vudu.

Win Win (2011) – In this blend of sports drama and comedy, Giamatti stars as a struggling attorney and volunteer wrestling coach who stumbles upon a star athlete through some questionable business dealings.

Where to Watch: You can stream Win Win on Hulu or rent it from digital outlets such as Amazon Video, YouTube Movies & Shows, and iTunes.

Barney’s Version (2010) – Giamatti won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Barney Panofsky in this film adaptation of Mordecai Richler’s novel. The movie tracks the life and loves of the impulsive Barney.

Where to Watch: Barney’s Version is available for streaming on platforms like Crave in Canada. In other regions, it may be found for rent or purchase on Amazon Prime Video and Apple iTunes.

Billions (TV Series 2016-present) – While not a movie, no list of Paul Giamatti’s performances would be complete without mentioning his role as Charles “Chuck” Rhoades Jr. in the television series “Billions,” where he portrays a shrewd U.S. Attorney hellbent on tracking down financial crimes.

Where to Watch: Billions is available for streaming on Showtime and can be accessed through services like Hulu that offer Showtime as an add-on subscription.

It is always best to check current listings as availability can change over time. With these movies in your watchlist, you’re set for hours of fine performances by one of Hollywood’s most compelling character actors.
