From the classic bistros to the sidewalk cafés, Paris is renowned for its vibrant café culture. Visitors and locals alike can enjoy a myriad of establishments that offer an authentic Parisian experience all year round. To help you navigate the sea of options, here’s a curated list of the best Paris cafés to visit, come rain or shine.

1. Café de Flore

One of the oldest coffeehouses in Paris, Café de Flore is a living piece of history. Since the 1880s, it has been a meeting place for intellectual and cultural elites including Ernest Hemingway and Jean-Paul Sartre. With its iconic red seating and prime location in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, this café is perfect for people-watching at any time of the year.

2. Les Deux Magots

Just steps away from Café de Flore is another historic café, Les Deux Magots. Frequented by famous figures such as Simone de Beauvoir and Albert Camus, this café provides a cozy atmosphere indoors and a spacious terrace outdoors for enjoying Paris’s ambience throughout the seasons.

3. Le Select

Stepping into Le Select feels like a journey back in time with its traditional brasserie decor and mirrored walls. It’s been serving since the 1920s in Montparnasse and remains open late into the night – ideal for long winter evenings or summer nights out in Paris.

4. Le Procope

Claimed to be Paris’s oldest café, founded in 1686, Le Procope not only offers an old-world charm but also serves as a small museum lined with memorabilia from past centuries. Its atmospheric rooms make it an inviting refuge no matter the outside weather.

5. Café des 2 Moulins

For those in love with cinematic charm, Café des 2 Moulins gained fame through its appearance in the movie “Amélie”. Located in Montmartre, it’s a whimsical place to take in the unique vibe of this artistic district.

6. Shakespeare & Company Café

Next to the legendary bookstore Shakespeare & Company, this café is newer to Paris’s café scene but has quickly earned its rightful place through its quaint setting and selection of English books. It’s particularly welcoming when you need an escape from the bustling city on chilly days.

7. La Palette

Another gem located in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, La Palette boasts a historic interior and an artsy crowd. Whether you sit at their Art Deco bar or under the heaters on their terrace during cooler days, you’ll feel so quintessentially Parisian.

8. Coutume Café

For those who prioritize their coffee brews as much as atmosphere, Coutume Café serves some of the best artisanal coffee in town using beans roasted on-site. The minimalist interior offers a peaceful break from the busy streets at any time of year.

9. Merci Used Book Café

Part of the concept store Merci, this café lets you bask amidst books while sipping your drink – perfect for solitary afternoons or catching up on reading regardless of season.

10. Le Consulat

Another distinctive spot in Montmartre is Le Consulat which has been immortalized in countless paintings and photographs throughout time due to its quintessential Parisian façade and location on winding historical streets.

While these establishments highlight timeless allure and beloved traditions that echo through their interiors and menus alike, they’re just examples of what awaits in Paris’s café culture; for each personified corner holds stories brewing with charm that are waiting to be discovered every day of every season in The City of Light.
