The Garden State is not only famous for its beautiful shorelines and bustling boardwalks but also for its mouthwatering culinary treasures, among which the humble burger holds a place of honor. Central New Jersey, in particular, is home to a plethora of eateries that serve up some of the best burgers you’ll find anywhere in the country. Whether you’re after classic simplicity or gourmet innovation, Central Jersey’s burger spots have got you covered.

One of the must-visit places is the renowned ‘Burger/Que’ in Somerville. This joint combines classic American burgers with a southern barbecue twist. Their ‘Smoky Bad Boy’—a beef patty topped with house-smoked brisket, cheddar cheese, and their signature BBQ sauce—is a local legend and perfectly encapsulates the fusion of flavors on offer.

Not too far away in New Brunswick, ‘The Grub Hut’ is a favorite among Rutgers students and locals alike. The Grub Hut prides itself on using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and offers an array of exotic meats like bison and kangaroo. Their ‘Bandito Burger’, with pepper jack cheese, jalapeños, and avocado lime dressing has set many a tongue tingling with glee and spice-induced joy.

Heading into Hamilton, ‘Killer Burgers’ presents itself as a contender for not just the best burger in Central Jersey but arguably in all of New Jersey. Here the patties are handcrafted from a proprietary blend of ground meat that’s grilled to perfection. The ‘Killer Classic’—topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and Killer Sauce—proves that sometimes simplicity reigns supreme.

Lastly, if you find yourself near Princeton looking for a sophisticated take on the American staple, ‘Blue Moose Burgers & Wings’ should be your go-to spot. Renowned for its innovative approach to burgers, Blue Moose offers creations like the ‘Goat Cheese & Fig Jam Burger’ which pairs sweet fig jam with tangy goat cheese atop a juicy seared patty—a combination designed to delight even the most discerning palates.

Central New Jersey thus boasts an impressive range of establishments offering delectable interpretations of the classic American burger. From smoky barbecue flavors to surprising gourmet toppings, each eatery brings something unique to the table—or perhaps more aptly, to the bun. Whether you’re a resident or just passing through, make sure you take some time to indulge in one (or several) of these top-tier burger experiences.
