Broadway is synonymous with theater and New York City is the beating heart where it all happens. From classic musicals to groundbreaking dramas, Broadway has offered up a feast for all senses for well over a century. The following selections are considered among the best Broadway shows of all time, true gems that everyone should see at least once on a trip to the Big Apple.

“The Phantom of the Opera” – Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece, this show has haunted the stages of Broadway since 1988. Telling the tale of a disfigured musical genius and his obsession with a young soprano, Christine Daaé, “The Phantom of the Opera” offers stunning sets, soaring music, and an unforgettable love story.

“Hamilton” – A more recent phenomenon that has quickly become iconic is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton”. Fusing hip-hop with history, it narrates the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. This innovative and exhilarating show is a must-see for its energetic performances and contemporary relevance.

“West Side Story” – Inspired by Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, this musical set in the 1950s New York features two rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. With exceptional choreography by Jerome Robbins and memorable music by Leonard Bernstein, “West Side Story” is a timeless tale of love and conflict.

“The Lion King” – An incredible interpretation of Disney’s animated classic, “The Lion King”, brings the African savannah to life on stage with its innovative puppetry and evocative music by Elton John. This show is an absolute delight for audiences of all ages.

“Les Misérables” – Adapted from Victor Hugo’s novel, “Les Misérables” offers a profound narrative set against the backdrop of revolutionary France. With its powerful music and moving story about love, redemption, and revolution, it has been stirring hearts since it opened.

“Wicked” – Telling the untold story of the witches of Oz, “Wicked” flips everything you thought you knew about “The Wizard of Oz” on its head. This show dazzles with its clever narrative twists, powerful vocals, and an emotional exploration of friendship and identity.

“Fiddler on the Roof” – This influential musical tells a poignant story about tradition and change as experienced by Tevye, a Jewish milkman in pre-revolutionary Russia. Its cultural significance and universally relatable themes make it an endearing classic.

“A Chorus Line” – Offering a behind-the-scenes look at Broadway itself, “A Chorus Line” examines the lives of seventeen dancers vying for a spot in a new musical. It’s raw, it’s real, and it resonates with anyone who’s ever had a dream.

These productions have not only defined generations but have also had an indelible mark on the cultural landscape around the world. Seeing any one of these shows is more than just an evening out; it’s experiencing a piece of live theatrical history. When you find yourself in New York City next, embrace the opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself – grab tickets to one (or more) of these phenomenal Broadway shows!
