City building games have captivated audiences with their complex simulations, strategic depth, and the sheer joy of creating something from nothing. These games not only challenge players to think critically and plan ahead but also offer an escape to construct ideal urban or rural landscapes. Here, we’ll take a look at the 12 best city building games of all time, ranked from great to legendary.

.Anno 2070 – Set in a near-future environment impacted by climate change, Anno 2070 blends city building with resource management and offers a thought-provoking take on how future cities might look.

.Tropico 6 – As El Presidente of your own island nation, you must build and manage everything from infrastructure to the economy while navigating political intrigue. The series is renowned for its tongue-in-cheek humor blended with genuine strategy.

.Banished – A game that emphasizes resource management and survival, Banished is about guiding a group of exiled travelers who must start anew in the wilderness. The challenge is in its simplicity – there are no wars or enemies, just nature and the needs of your settlers.

.Cities XL – With an expansive array of buildings and an innovative trading system, Cities XL was ambitiously designed for city planning enthusiasts but fell just short of greatness due to lackluster support post-launch.

.Surviving Mars – A more recent entry that tasks players with building a colony on Mars. It’s a highly thematic take on the city building genre that incorporates science fiction elements and the challenges of extraterrestrial colonization.

.SimCity 4 – Released in 2003, SimCity 4 is often hailed as the pinnacle of the classic SimCity series due to its depth and complexity in simulating a bustling metropolis and its outlying areas.

.Cities: Skylines – When it was released in 2015, Cities: Skylines took the crown as the modern successor to SimCity with its impressive graphics, complex simulation systems, and robust mod support from an active community.

.Pharaoh + Cleopatra – This classic takes players back to Ancient Egypt where they need to build cities along the Nile, manage floods, and construct monumental pyramids that withstand time itself.

.Caesar III – Part of Sierra’s City Building Series from the late ’90s, Caesar III tasked players with constructing thriving Roman cities while appeasing gods and citizens alike—a mixture of history with captivating gameplay mechanics.

.Frostpunk – A bleak survival-oriented city builder set in a steampunk Victorian world beset by endless winter. Frostpunk challenges players with ethically charged decisions making it not just a city builder but a grim tale about endurance against all odds.

.The Settlers II (10th Anniversary) – The Settlers series has long been revered for its combination of city building and real-time strategy elements; this particular title stands out for honing those features into an all-time classic.

.SimCity (1989) – No list would be complete without paying homage to the game that started it all—Will Wright’s original SimCity revolutionized the genre with its then-cutting-edge simulation techniques establishing itself as a timeless icon in city building games.

These titles represent some of the finest examples where players can express their creativity while indulging in intricate systems representing urban development dynamics over time. Each game brings something unique to the table—be it historical scenarios or futuristic settings—ensuring that city builders can find worlds upon worlds wherein to leave their mark.
