Europe has been the cradle for some of the most enchanting and gripping fantasy dramas. With a rich history steeped in myth and legend, it’s no surprise that European cinema and television have produced many timeless classics in the fantasy genre. Here’s a look at the ten best European fantasy dramas of all time, each offering a unique escape into worlds of magic, intrigue, and adventure.

.”Game of Thrones” (2011-2019) – This British-American series adapted from George R.R. Martin’s novels became a cultural phenomenon with its intricate plot and stunning visuals. Set in the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, it’s a tale of power, betrayal, and mysticism.

.”The Witcher” (2019-Present) – Based on the book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, “The Witcher” is a Polish-American fantasy drama that follows Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter struggling to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.

.”Merlin” (2008-2012) – A British take on the Arthurian legends, “Merlin” presents the story of the legendary wizard as a young man at Camelot. The show focuses on his relationship with Prince Arthur and the magic that shapes their destinies.

.”Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell” (2015) – This British miniseries is an adaptation of Susanna Clarke’s novel set during the Napoleonic Wars in an England where magic once existed and is about to return through two very different magicians.

.”Dark” (2017-2020) – Hailing from Germany, “Dark” is a mind-bending series involving time travel and family secrets spanning multiple generations in the small town of Winden.

.”The Last Kingdom” (2015-Present) – Based on Bernard Cornwell’s “The Saxon Stories,” this British series combines historical drama with elements of fantasy as it chronicles the rise of King Alfred the Great and his quest to unite the fragmented kingdoms to repel Viking invaders.

.”Carnival Row” (2019-Present) – A neo-noir fantasy series from Germany that explores a Victorian-style city inhabited by humans and mythical creatures alike, facing social and political turmoil while unravelling gruesome murders.

.”His Dark Materials” (2019-Present) – Adapted from Philip Pullman’s acclaimed trilogy, this British fantasy drama unfolds across parallel universes and follows young Lyra Belacqua’s journey to understand a mysterious substance called Dust.

.”Outlander” (2014-Present) – This British-American series based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels blends time travel, history, and romance. It tells the story of Claire Randall, a World War II nurse who finds herself transported to 18th century Scotland.

.”Penny Dreadful” (2014-2016) – A British-American horror drama set in Victorian London that weaves classic literature’s horror origins by bringing together characters such as Dracula, Frankenstein, and Dorian Gray in one darkly enthralling narrative.

These dramas are not just traditional fairy tales but are layered with complex characters, moral quandaries, political intrigue, and epic storytelling that continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
