Animated films have long offered a medium through which storytellers can convey powerful narratives about war that might be too intense or complex in a live-action setting. They can simplify and abstract difficult concepts, making them more accessible, especially to younger audiences. Here’s a list of the 10 best animated movies about war that have touched audiences with their stories of conflict, resilience, and hope.

.”Grave of the Fireflies” (1988) – Isao Takahata’s masterpiece tells a heart-wrenching story of two siblings struggling to survive in Japan during the final months of World War II. It is often regarded as one of the most powerful war-themed animated films ever made.

.”Waltz with Bashir” (2008) – Ari Folman’s innovative animated documentary explores his experiences as an Israeli soldier during the 1982 Lebanon War. This film is unique for its blending of real testimony and memory-infused animation.

.”Persepolis” (2007) – Marjane Satrapi’s autobiographical film illustrates her childhood in Iran during and after the Islamic revolution. The stark black-and-white animation effectively conveys the impact of war on a personal level.

.”The Wind Rises” (2013) – Hayao Miyazaki’s fictionalized biography of Jiro Horikoshi, the designer of Japan’s famous WWII fighter plane Mitsubishi A6M Zero, delves into the ethical dilemmas faced by engineers during times of conflict.

.”When the Wind Blows” (1986) – This British animation based on Raymond Briggs’ graphic novel depicts an elderly couple dealing with the fallout of a nuclear attack. It is a moving take on war’s consequences on civilians.

.”Maus” (TBA) – The upcoming adaptation of Art Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel will likely join this list upon release. “Maus” is a poignant portrayal of a Holocaust survivor’s tale, represented through allegorical animal characters.

.”The Breadwinner” (2017) – Nora Twomey’s film, produced by Angelina Jolie, follows an 11-year-old girl living under Taliban rule in Afghanistan who must disguise herself as a boy to support her family after her father is unjustly arrested.

.”In This Corner of the World” (2016) – This tender film offers a glimpse into the life of Suzu Urano as she moves to Kure City on the outskirts of Hiroshima during WWII and tries to maintain domestic normalcy amidst wartime chaos.

.“Giovanni’s Island” (2014) – Tells the story of two brothers living on Shikotan Island as it transitions from Japanese to Soviet control after Japan’s surrender at the end of WWII, offering a unique perspective on how war affects children.

.“Sausage Party” (2016) – While not about human warfare, this adult animated comedy uses food items in a supermarket to satirize conflict and existential warring ideologies in what can be viewed as an allegory for human wars.

These films are not only significant for their stunning animation but also for their ability to use storytelling to cast new light on historical events and personal experiences with war, leaving lasting impressions on their audience.
