Tax Day 2024: Here’s When You Can Start Filing Your Taxes

As the new year rolls in, taxpayers across America are gearing up for a significant annual milestone: the start of tax season. With Tax Day on the horizon, many are marking their calendars and preparing their paperwork to ensure a smooth and timely filing process. So when does this pivotal financial period begin for 2024?

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has not yet announced the official opening date for filing your 2023 taxes, but based on previous years, taxpayers can expect to start submitting their tax returns towards the end of January 2024. The IRS typically opens the tax-filing window about three weeks before the April 15 deadline—unless this date falls on a weekend or holiday, in which case Tax Day is moved to the next business day.

For those eager to get a head start, it’s advisable to organize pertinent tax documents as soon as they’re available. This includes W-2 forms, 1099s, expense receipts, and any other relevant financial information from the past year that can impact your returns.

While procrastination may be tempting, there are several benefits to filing early. Early filers can anticipate quicker tax refunds and have extra time to ensure thoroughness and accuracy on their returns, reducing the likelihood of errors. Additionally, it provides increased protection against tax-related identity theft—as fraudulent claims using another person’s credentials are often submitted early in the season.

Moreover, if an individual finds themselves owing money to the IRS, knowing the amount earlier provides more time to plan for payment before the deadline hits.

With the growth in popularity of online tax filing platforms and professional tax preparation services, taxpayers have more resources at their disposal than ever before. Whether you choose to self-file through one of these digital options or engage a professional accountant, keeping abreast of IRS announcements and being proactive with your preparations will pave the way for a stress-free Tax Day on April 15, 2024.
