Smokey al pastor, tangy birria or spicy chorizo? Where to find Houston’s best tacos

Houston is a melting pot of cultures and culinary traditions, a place where the taco is not just food but a staple of gastronomic delight. With a dynamic Mexican and Tex-Mex food scene, taco enthusiasts in Houston are spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting their preferred flavor profiles – smoky al pastor, tangy birria, or spicy chorizo.

True taco aficionados know that a great taco begins with fresh, handmade tortillas, which serve as the perfect canvas for an array of fillings. Al pastor tacos, with their origins rooted in Lebanese shawarma, feature marinated pork that’s been expertly cooked on a vertical spit. The smoky and slightly caramelized meat is often paired with pineapple for a touch of sweetness, onions, cilantro, and salsa. Those seeking this delectable experience should head to ‘Tacos Tierra Caliente’, a food truck that’s become an institution in the West Alabama area.

For those looking to indulge in the rich and tangy sensations of birria tacos, ‘Gerardo’s Drive-In’ is an obligatory stop. Birria – traditionally made with goat or beef – is seasoned with an arsenal of spices including cumin, bay leaves, and cinnamon and left to stew until the meat is pull-apart tender. At Gerardo’s, the birria tacos come soaked in consomé, with the option of diving spoon-first into extra consommé on the side.

Then there’s the spicy bite of chorizo tacos. Lovers of heat should look no further than ‘La Macro,’ which serves tantalizingly zesty chorizo blended to perfection with eggs or potatoes in their breakfast tacos – though these are more than acceptable all day long.

Houston’s best tacos also bring something else to the table – atmosphere. The casual taqueria settings often buzz with lively conversations and laughter. Whether it’s at ‘Brothers Taco House’ in East Downtown or ‘Velvet Taco’ near Washington Ave., each eatery comes with its own personality but shares one common denominator: undeniable dedication to taco craftsmanship.

Perhaps one of Houston’s best-kept secrets is ‘Taconazo’ hidden within the Northside Village neighborhood. Here you might experience what many locals claim to be the definitive street-style taco.

Connoisseurs of food trucks eager for variety will find solace in ‘El Ultimo’, where daily specials keep their menu exciting. From succulent options like duck confit topped with habanero mango salsa to comfort classics like barbacoa tacos wrapped in corn tortillas, there’s always something new to discover.

Satisfying cravings for Houston’s best tacos requires exploration and an appetite for both food and culture. Each establishment mentioned maps out part of Houston’s broader narrative — one where every bite tells a story about diversity, tradition, and the local love for some truly great tacos.
