Simple technology: The best tech for non-technical people

In a world where technology is evolving at a breakneck pace, it’s easy to feel left behind if you’re not particularly tech-savvy. However, there’s a whole segment of the tech industry devoted to creating simple, user-friendly devices and software for non-technical people. These products prioritize easy setup, intuitive use, and reliability over cutting-edge features that may be overwhelming for those who don’t need them.

Devices like smart speakers, e-readers, and straightforward smartphones are the best examples of simple technology. Smart speakers, such as Google Home or Amazon’s Echo, allow users to access information, music, and control smart home devices with just their voice. They require minimal setup and offer immediate utility through voice commands.

E-readers like Amazon’s Kindle or the Kobo have revolutionized the way we read books. With a simple interface and long-lasting battery life, these devices make it easy for anyone to carry around thousands of books without the clutter or physical burden. Plus, they often offer features such as adjustable text size and built-in dictionaries to enhance the reading experience.

For smarter communication without complexity, phones like the Jitterbug Smart3 are designed for non-technical users. With large icons, an easy-to-navigate interface, and straightforward calling functions – these types of phones strip away unnecessary complexity so staying connected is not a daunting task.

On the software side of things, tools like Google Docs and Canva simplify common tasks without dumbing them down. Google Docs offers a word processor with collaborative features that make document sharing and editing simple enough for anyone to grasp within minutes. Canva helps users with little to no design experience create beautiful designs using templates and a drag-and-drop interface.

It’s clear that while the digital divide does exist, companies are doing their best to make sure that everyone—regardless of technical expertise—can reap the benefits of modern technology. Simple tech unobtrusively enhances daily life without demanding its users become IT experts overnight. Whether it’s staying in touch with loved ones, enjoying a good book or managing tasks at work; there’s likely a device or app designed with simplicity in mind. The key for non-technical people is to embrace technology at their own pace and recognize that there are myriad options available tailored just for them.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
