Ring Video Doorbell 4 Review: Minor Upgrades to an Already Decent Device

The Ring Video Doorbell 4 is the newest addition to the already popular Ring family, offering a few minor upgrades to an already decent device. This review will cover those upgrades, its performance, and whether it’s worth the investment for your home security needs.

Design and Installation

The Ring Video Doorbell 4 maintains a similar design to its predecessor, featuring a sleek and modern look that blends well with any home exterior. The installation process remains as simple as ever, with all necessary tools and instructions provided in the box. You can install the doorbell either wired or battery-operated, depending on your preference.

Upgraded Features

1. Color Pre-Roll Video

One of the significant upgrades in Ring Video Doorbell 4 is the new color Pre-Roll Video feature. Instead of only black and white Pre-Roll footage in previous versions, you now get full-color video that provides better detail of events leading up to a motion alert.

2. Battery Life

The Ring Video Doorbell 4 claims to have improved battery life compared to its previous version. While extended battery life is always a welcome improvement, it’s still recommended to keep an extra battery handy or opt for wired installation if frequent charging isn’t ideal for you.

3. Quick Replies

Another new addition is the Quick Replies feature, which allows users to choose from preset responses that the doorbell can play when someone presses the button or initiate two-way talk with visitors. It’s a convenient option for those who may not always be available to answer their door in person.

Performance

In terms of video quality, the Ring Video Doorbell 4 maintains the same 1080p HD resolution available with its predecessors. The live view and recorded videos are clear, with good color reproduction and night vision capabilities.

The motion detection feature works as intended but can be overly sensitive, even when adjusting the sensitivity settings. Some users may experience false alerts from cars passing by or other environmental factors.

The doorbell’s app integration is seamless, allowing users to customize settings, view live feeds, and receive notifications in real-time.

Final Verdict

Overall, the Ring Video Doorbell 4 presents only minor upgrades to its predecessor. Existing Ring Video Doorbell 3 users may not find it necessary to make the upgrade. For those who haven’t experienced a smart video doorbell before, the Ring Video Doorbell 4 is still an excellent investment for home security.

Its new features, such as color Pre-Roll Video and Quick Replies, do add value and make it stand out against competitors. However, it’s essential to weigh up whether these upgrades are enough to justify the cost for your specific needs.
