Rep. AOC Files Articles of Impeachment Against Supreme Court Justices Thomas and Alito

In a surprise move that has sent shockwaves throughout the Capitol, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has filed articles of impeachment against two Supreme Court Justices, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, charging them with “grossly negligent and corrupt” behavior in their handling of certain high-profile cases.
The articles of impeachment, which were filed in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, claim that Justices Thomas and Alito consistently displayed “bias and partisanship” in their decisions, particularly in cases related to reproductive rights, voting rights, and environmental protection. The move is a dramatic escalation of the political divisions in Washington, and has already sparked a heated debate about the legitimacy and integrity of the Supreme Court.
According to the articles, Justice Thomas and Alito’s biases were evident in a number of cases, including the landmark decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which struck down the federal right to abortion. In a strongly worded statement, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez accused the two justices of “compromising the integrity of the judiciary and undermining the trust of the American people.”
“In a time when the Supreme Court is supposed to be an impartial and authoritative institution, we have two justices who have consistently demonstrated a clear bias towards the interests of the wealthy and powerful, rather than the people,” said Ocasio-Cortez. “Their decisions have resulted in devastating consequences for millions of Americans, and it is our duty to take action to hold them accountable.”
The articles of impeachment cite specific cases, including the 2016 Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. decision, which allowed corporations to deny employees access to contraception coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Another case cited was the 2000 Bush v. Gore decision, which effectively ended the presidential election results in Florida and handed the White House to George W. Bush.
The impeachment process is expected to be a lengthy and contentious one, requiring a two-thirds majority vote in the Senate to pass. Many legal experts predict that the charges will ultimately be dismissed, but the move is likely to further polarize the nation and raise questions about the accountability of the nation’s highest court.
In response to the articles, Justice Thomas issued a statement denying any wrongdoing and accusing Rep. Ocasio-Cortez of “baseless” and “frivolous” charges. Justice Alito has declined to comment.
The impeachment process is scheduled to begin in the House Judiciary Committee, with hearings expected to take place in the coming weeks. The move is likely to ignite a fierce debate about the role of the judiciary in American politics and the balance of power between the branches of government.
