Americans Lack Confidence in Trump’s Trade Policies, 2026 Survey

As the repercussions of President Donald Trump’s trade policies continue to unfold, a recent survey from the Pew Research Center reveals a significant lack of confidence among Americans regarding his handling of tariffs. Conducted between March 23 and March 29, 2026, the survey sampled 3,507 adults and uncovered deep partisan divides and shifts in trade dynamics, particularly with major trading partners like China and Mexico.

Concerns Over Trade Policy

A striking 58% of Americans expressed a lack of confidence in Trump’s overall trade policy decisions. This sentiment is compounded by even more pronounced skepticism towards his approach to tariffs, with 63% of respondents indicating they are not confident in how he has managed this crucial economic tool. These figures reflect growing anxiety about the long-term impacts of these policies on the U.S. economy.

Impact on Trade with China

One of the most notable effects of Trump’s tariffs has been on trade with China. From 2024 to 2025, imports from China plummeted by 28.0%, while exports also took a hit, falling by 17.7%. This substantial reduction has led to a narrowing of the trade deficit with China, decreasing from $262.2 billion to $168.1 billion. While this might initially appear as a success for the administration, the broader implications of such a downturn raise questions about the sustainability of these trade strategies.

The Shift in Trade Dynamics

Interestingly, while imports and exports with China saw significant declines, trade with Mexico demonstrated a different trend. Imports from Mexico increased by 4.4%, while U.S. exports to the neighboring country experienced a meager rise of 1.5%. This disparity highlights the complexities and challenges within North American trade relations amidst ongoing tariff discussions.

Partisan Perspectives on Trade Policies

The Pew Research survey also underscores the stark partisan divides regarding perceptions of Trump’s trade policies. Among respondents aged 50 and over, a notable 84% of Republicans expressed confidence in Trump’s trade decisions, contrasting sharply with the 92% of Democrats in the same age group who reported a lack of confidence. This divide not only reflects differing political ideologies but also suggests a potential challenge for the administration in garnering broader support for its trade strategies.

Demographic Insights

Further analysis reveals that younger Americans also exhibit skepticism toward Trump’s trade policies. As the economic landscape evolves, younger voters may prioritize different factors compared to their older counterparts. This generational gap in confidence levels could have significant implications for future elections and the political landscape surrounding trade policy.

Economic Ramifications

The survey results come at a time when economists are closely monitoring the effects of tariffs on the U.S. economy. Critics argue that the imposition of tariffs often leads to increased prices for consumers and can disrupt supply chains, ultimately hindering economic growth. As the public’s confidence in Trump’s trade policies wanes, questions arise about the potential for a recalibration of U.S. trade strategies moving forward.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, the Biden administration faces the challenge of addressing the concerns highlighted in this survey while also navigating complex international trade relations. Policymakers will need to find a balance between protecting American industries and fostering healthy trade relationships that can stimulate economic growth.

Conclusion

The Pew Research Center survey presents a sobering view of American public sentiment regarding Trump’s handling of trade and tariffs. With a significant majority expressing doubts about the effectiveness of these policies, the administration is tasked with addressing these concerns while also adapting to shifting trade dynamics. As negotiations with major trading partners continue, the outcome may reshape not only U.S. trade policy but also the economic landscape for years to come.
