Product Review of the LG OLED G4 Series (Released January 5, 2025)

Introduction

LG has long been a leader in OLED technology, and with the release of the OLED G4 Series on January 5, 2025, they’ve once again raised the bar for what consumers can expect from a high-end television. This latest iteration of LG’s Gallery Series promises improvements in brightness, color accuracy, and processing power, all while maintaining the sleek, wall-mount friendly design that has made the G Series a favorite among design-conscious consumers. In this review, we’ll examine how the G4 builds upon its predecessors and whether it manages to stay competitive in an increasingly crowded premium TV market.

Review

The LG OLED G4 Series immediately impresses with its striking design. The TV maintains the ultra-thin profile of previous Gallery Series models, measuring just 20mm in depth. This allows it to sit flush against the wall when mounted, creating a seamless, picture-frame-like appearance that blends effortlessly into any living space. For those who prefer not to wall-mount, LG now includes a stylish tabletop stand, addressing a common criticism of previous G Series models.

At the heart of the G4 is LG’s new OLED EX panel, which utilizes deuterium and proprietary algorithm-based EX Technology to increase brightness by up to 30% compared to conventional OLED displays. In our tests, we measured peak brightness levels of up to 2200 nits in HDR highlights, a significant improvement over the G3 model. This enhanced brightness not only makes HDR content more impactful but also improves visibility in brightly lit rooms, addressing one of the few remaining weaknesses of OLED technology.

Color performance on the G4 is nothing short of exceptional. The TV covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color space and even extends into the BT.2020 gamut, resulting in vibrant, lifelike colors that pop off the screen. LG’s new Alpha 10 AI Processor plays a crucial role in optimizing image quality, using deep learning algorithms to enhance upscaling, reduce noise, and improve motion handling.

One of the most exciting features of the G4 is its support for 144Hz refresh rates across all HDMI 2.1 ports. This makes it an ideal choice for gamers, especially those with high-end PCs capable of pushing frame rates beyond 120Hz. The G4 also includes LG’s Game Optimizer menu, which provides easy access to gaming-related settings and information, such as VRR status and input lag.

Audio performance has seen a notable upgrade with the introduction of LG’s AI Sound Pro technology. This system uses spatial awareness to create a virtual 9.1.2 surround sound experience from the TV’s built-in speakers. While it doesn’t replace a dedicated surround sound system, it provides a surprisingly immersive audio experience that complements the stellar visual performance.

The G4 runs on LG’s webOS 9.0 platform, which offers a clean, intuitive interface and support for all major streaming services. The new Magic Remote includes NFC capabilities for easy content sharing from mobile devices and improved voice control functionality.

One area where the G4 truly shines is in its future-proofing. In addition to its cutting-edge gaming features, the TV supports all major HDR formats, including Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, and HLG. It’s also one of the first TVs to support the new ATSC 3.0 broadcast standard, ensuring compatibility with next-generation over-the-air broadcasts.

Conclusion

The LG OLED G4 Series represents a significant evolution in OLED technology. With its improved brightness, exceptional color performance, and gamer-friendly features, it sets a new standard for what consumers can expect from a premium television in 2025. While it comes with a premium price tag to match its high-end features, the G4 justifies its cost with its stunning picture quality, sleek design, and forward-thinking technology. For those who demand the very best and are willing to pay for it, the LG OLED G4 Series is a compelling choice that is likely to satisfy even the most discerning home theater enthusiasts.
