Product Review of the LG CineBeam HU915QE

Introduction

LG’s latest entry into the ultra-short throw (UST) projector market, the CineBeam HU915QE, was unveiled in late December 2024. This premium projector aims to combine the convenience of a UST design with top-tier image quality, positioning itself as a viable alternative to large-screen TVs for those seeking a more cinematic experience in their living rooms.

Review

The LG CineBeam HU915QE makes a strong first impression with its sleek, modern design. The projector’s clean lines and fabric-covered front panel allow it to blend seamlessly into most living room decors. Its ultra-short throw capability means it can project a 100-inch image from just 9.8 inches away from the wall, making it an excellent option for those with limited space.

At the core of the HU915QE is LG’s latest triple laser technology, which delivers an impressive 3,700 ANSI lumens of brightness. This high brightness output, combined with the projector’s ability to adapt to ambient light conditions, means you can enjoy a clear, vibrant image even in well-lit rooms – a crucial feature for a projector designed to replace a living room TV.

The projector boasts true 4K UHD resolution (3840 x 2160), and the image quality does not disappoint. Colors are rich and accurate, thanks to the laser light source covering 94% of the DCI-P3 color space. The contrast ratio is equally impressive, with deep blacks and bright highlights that bring HDR content to life. Speaking of HDR, the HU915QE supports multiple HDR formats including HDR10, HLG, and even Dolby Vision, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of high-quality content.

LG has made significant strides in their image processing capabilities with this model. The new α9 Gen 5 AI Processor 4K, borrowed from LG’s high-end TVs, brings a host of advanced features to the projector. These include AI Picture Pro, which uses deep learning algorithms to enhance image quality, and AI Sound Pro, which optimizes audio output based on the content being played.

The smart TV functionality is powered by LG’s webOS platform, which provides a user-friendly interface and access to a wide array of streaming services. The inclusion of AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support adds extra convenience for Apple users, while built-in Alexa and Google Assistant enable voice control.

For gamers, the HU915QE offers a Game Optimizer mode that reduces input lag to around 27ms at 4K 60Hz. While not as low as some dedicated gaming projectors, it’s more than adequate for most casual gaming scenarios. The projector also supports HDMI 2.1 features like Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), enhancing the gaming experience further.

Audio performance is another area where the HU915QE excels. The built-in 2.2 channel 40W speaker system, developed in collaboration with Meridian Audio, delivers rich, room-filling sound. While it won’t replace a dedicated surround sound system, it’s more than capable for everyday use and eliminates the need for external speakers in many setups.

One potential drawback of the HU915QE is its price point, which puts it at the higher end of the consumer projector market. However, when compared to premium large-screen TVs of similar size, the value proposition becomes more apparent.

Conclusion

The LG CineBeam HU915QE represents a significant step forward in the ultra-short throw projector category. Its combination of exceptional brightness, image quality, and smart features make it a compelling alternative to large-screen TVs for those seeking a more cinematic experience in their living rooms. While the high price may be a barrier for some, the HU915QE delivers a level of performance and convenience that justifies its premium positioning. For those with the budget and the desire for a top-tier large-screen experience without dedicating space to a traditional projector setup, the LG CineBeam HU915QE is an excellent choice.
