Product Review: Asics Novablast 5 – The Evolution of Bounce

Introduction

The Asics Novablast series has been a game-changer in the running shoe market since its inception, offering a unique blend of responsiveness and cushioning. With the release of the Novablast 5 in December 2024, Asics has once again raised the bar for what runners can expect from a daily trainer. This latest iteration promises to build upon the success of its predecessors while introducing new technologies to enhance the running experience.

The Review

Right out of the box, the Asics Novablast 5 catches the eye with its sleek, modern design. The upper features a new engineered mesh that not only looks premium but also provides excellent breathability. The colorways available are vibrant and eye-catching, making this shoe as stylish as it is functional.

Slipping into the Novablast 5, the first thing you’ll notice is the plush step-in feel. Asics has refined the heel collar and tongue, using a softer material that hugs the foot comfortably. The fit is true to size, with a roomy toe box that allows for natural toe splay during runs.

The midsole is where the Novablast 5 truly shines. Asics has introduced their latest FlyteFoam Blast+ technology, which offers 20% more bounce than the previous version. This translates to an incredibly responsive ride that seems to propel you forward with each step. Despite the increased responsiveness, the cushioning hasn’t been compromised. Long runs feel effortless as the midsole absorbs impact effectively, reducing fatigue even after miles on the road.

The outsole features a new traction pattern that provides excellent grip on various surfaces, including wet pavements. Durability has also been improved, with early testers reporting minimal wear after 100+ miles.

One of the most significant improvements in the Novablast 5 is the stability. Previous versions were sometimes criticized for feeling a bit wobbly, especially during quick transitions. Asics has addressed this by widening the base slightly and incorporating guide rails in the heel. These changes result in a more stable ride without sacrificing the shoe’s characteristic bounce.

The weight of the shoe has been slightly reduced, coming in at 9.2 oz for men’s size 9 and 7.8 oz for women’s size 7. This puts it in the sweet spot for a daily trainer that can handle everything from easy recovery runs to tempo workouts.

Energy return is another area where the Novablast 5 excels. The responsive midsole combined with the rocker geometry creates a smooth heel-to-toe transition that feels effortless, especially at higher speeds. This makes the shoe versatile enough for various types of runs, from long slow distances to fartlek sessions.

Conclusion

The Asics Novablast 5 is a testament to Asics’ commitment to innovation in the running shoe industry. It successfully builds upon the strengths of its predecessors while addressing previous weaknesses. The result is a highly versatile daily trainer that offers an exceptional blend of cushioning, responsiveness, and stability. Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or a casual jogger, the Novablast 5 is likely to impress with its performance and comfort. It’s a shoe that makes you want to run just one more mile, and for many runners, that’s the highest praise a running shoe can receive.
