The Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 II is the latest addition to Panasonic’s S-series of mirrorless cameras, designed for enthusiasts and professionals alike. Boasting a number of improvements over its predecessor, the DC-S5, this camera offers impressive performance and features in a compact and lightweight body. In this review, we’ll take a closer look at the key features and overall performance of the Lumix DC-S5 II.

Key Features

1. Sensor and Image Quality: The Lumix DC-S5 II features a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor paired with the Venus Engine image processor. This combination delivers excellent image quality with high resolution, accurate colors, and a wide dynamic range.

2. Autofocus Performance: The camera utilizes the Advanced DFD (Depth From Defocus) contrast-detection autofocus system with 225 AF points, which offers faster and more accurate focusing compared to its predecessor. It also includes updated AI algorithms for improved subject tracking and detection, even in low light conditions.

3. Video Capability: The DC-S5 II is capable of recording up to 4K 60fps video internally with 10-bit 4:2:0 color sampling or externally to an Atomos Ninja V recorder at up to 4K 60fps 10-bit 4:2:2. Furthermore, it supports timecode synchronization via HDMI for multi-camera setups.

4. Robust Body and Weather Sealing: Built with a magnesium alloy frame, the Lumix DC-S5 II provides durability while maintaining its compact size. Additionally, the camera is sealed against dust, moisture, and freezing temperatures down to -14°F (-10°C).

5. High-Resolution Viewfinder and Tilt-Angle LCD Screen: The electronic viewfinder (EVF) offers a resolution of 2.36 million dots with a 0.74x magnification, ensuring clear and accurate framing of your shots. The camera also features a 3.0-inch, 1.84 million-dot tilt-angle touchscreen LCD for easy operation and shooting from various angles.

6. In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS): The DC-S5 II boasts a useful 5-axis in-body stabilization system, which compensates for up to 6.5 stops of camera shake to deliver sharper handheld images and smoother video footage.

Performance

The image quality produced by the Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 II is outstanding, with plenty of detail, accurate colors and a wide dynamic range for both stills and video. Low light performance is equally impressive, with the camera maintaining excellent image quality even at high ISO settings.

The updated autofocus system performs well in various situations, including low light and fast-moving subjects. The AI-powered subject tracking does a great job at following moving subjects, making it suitable for sports and wildlife photography.

In terms of video quality, the DC-S5 II delivers professional-level footage with crisp details and accurate colors. Its video capabilities put it on par with some of the more expensive competitors in the market.

Conclusion

The Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 II is a worthy successor to the well-received DC-S5, offering numerous improvements in performance and features while maintaining its compact size and robust build. At this price point, the DC-S5 II provides fashionably professional and enthusiast photographers alike with an incredibly versatile camera that excels in both photography and videography tasks.
