Out Of Half And Half? Here Are The Best Substitutes

Finding yourself out of half and half can be a minor setback, whether you’re in the middle of baking or just looking to add a touch of creaminess to your morning coffee. But fear not—there are several substitutes that you can use which are likely already in your kitchen!

1.Milk and Butter – Combine 7/8 cup of milk with 1 tablespoon of melted butter; this can be used as a cup-for-cup replacement in both cooking and coffee.

2.Heavy Cream – Simply thin heavy cream with an equal part of water to mimic the consistency and richness of half and half.

3.Milk and Cream – Mix 1 part heavy cream with 2 parts milk, and you’ve made homemade half and half! Adjust the fat content by using skim, 1%, 2%, or whole milk.

4.Evaporated Milk – This is thicker than regular milk and can be used straight from the can as a substitute for half and half in recipes.

5.Non-Dairy Milk and Oil – For a vegan alternative, mix 2/3 cup of soy or almond milk with 1/3 cup of light olive oil or coconut oil.

6.Greek Yogurt and Milk – Mixing equal parts Greek yogurt with whole milk can give the thickness needed for recipes, especially soups or sauces.

7.Sour Cream – In certain recipes like baked goods or dressings where tanginess is acceptable, sour cream mixed with water to thin it out can work as a substitute.

8.Cream Cheese – Dilute cream cheese with milk until it reaches the desired consistency—this works well in some sauces or soups.

9.Cottage Cheese – Blend cottage cheese until smooth, then mix with milk to achieve a creamy texture suitable as a stand-in for half-and-half in many recipes.

10.Silken Tofu and Soy Milk – Blend silken tofu with soy milk until smooth for another non-dairy substitute that mimics the silkiness of half-and-half.

When substituting, consider what you’re using it for. If it’s coffee, you’ll probably want something that simply alters the drink’s richness without much added flavor, like milk and butter or diluted heavy cream. If it’s for cooking or baking, think about how each substitute might affect the dish’s overall taste and texture. With these substitutes at hand, there’s no need to make an emergency grocery run when you find your half-and-half carton empty!
