OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence research lab, has hired former White House official Aaron “Ronnie” Chatterji as its first chief economist. Chatterji, a renowned scholar and expert in innovation, will spearhead research on the profound economic impacts of artificial intelligence, focusing on its influence on growth and job creation.

Chatterji’s appointment signals OpenAI’s commitment to understanding the complex and far-reaching implications of its technology for the global economy. As the creator of groundbreaking AI models like ChatGPT and DALL-E, OpenAI is at the forefront of a technological revolution with the potential to reshape industries, disrupt jobs, and alter the very fabric of society.

Chatterji’s expertise lies in analyzing the interplay between technology, innovation, and the labor market. He brings a wealth of experience from his time at the White House, where he served as Deputy Assistant to the President for Economic Policy, advising on economic and technological issues.

His research at OpenAI will focus on crucial questions such as: How will AI impact different sectors and job categories? What are the opportunities and challenges for workers in the face of automation? How can policy be designed to maximize the economic benefits of AI while mitigating potential downsides?

Chatterji’s appointment is a significant step for OpenAI, as it underscores the company’s commitment to responsible AI development. By understanding the economic implications of its technology, OpenAI aims to ensure that AI’s potential benefits are realized while mitigating potential risks to the workforce and broader society. His research will undoubtedly shape the discourse on AI’s future and provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders alike.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
