The Olympia–Lacey–Tumwater metro area is making waves in environmental conservation with a groundbreaking salmon restoration project. The initiative, dubbed “Salmon Safe Streams,” uses a combination of habitat restoration, smart dam technology, and community engagement to help recover dwindling salmon populations.

Central to the project is a new type of “fish-friendly” dam that allows for easier salmon passage while still generating hydroelectric power. These dams use AI-controlled gates that open and close based on water flow and fish movement patterns, significantly improving salmon survival rates during migration.

In addition to the dam improvements, the project includes extensive habitat restoration along key waterways. Local schools and community groups have been actively involved in planting native vegetation and removing invasive species along stream banks.

Early results are promising, with a 30% increase in salmon returns observed in the first year of the project. Washington State Governor Lisa Chen praised the initiative, saying, “This project demonstrates how technology and community effort can come together to solve complex environmental challenges.”
