Ohio Solar Panel Incentives: Rebates, Tax Credits and More

Ohio is increasingly recognizing the benefits of clean and renewable energy sources, leading to an upsurge in solar panel installations across the state. The incentives for Ohio residents to invest in solar panels include various rebates, tax credits, and additional benefits that make solar energy a more affordable and appealing option.

The most significant incentive comes in the form of a federal investment tax credit (ITC), which allows you to deduct 26% of the cost of installing a solar energy system from your federal taxes. This substantial tax credit can lead to thousands of dollars in savings, but it’s important to note that the ITC rate is set to reduce after 2022.

On a state level, Ohio has a renewable portfolio standard (RPS) that requires utility companies to source a portion of their energy from renewable sources. This encourages the utilities to offer rebates and incentives to homeowners for solar panel installations. While these rebates can vary by company and region, they can provide additional financial relief on top of the federal tax credit.

Ohio also provides a state-wide net metering policy. This means that any excess electricity your solar panels generate can be sold back to the grid in exchange for credits on your utility bill. Over time, this not only offsets the cost of your own electricity consumption but can even turn into a profitable investment as you essentially become an energy provider.

Another financial benefit is the Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs). For every megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity your system produces, you earn one SREC. These credits can then be sold on an open market, providing another source of income from your renewable energy investment.

Lastly, Ohio residents are exempt from both sales tax when purchasing a solar energy system and property tax additions for any increase in home value resulting from the installation. These exemptions can substantially decrease the upfront cost and improve the long-term return on investment.

With these incentives in place, Ohioans have more reasons than ever to switch to solar — reducing both their carbon footprint and their energy bills. As policies continue to evolve with increasing focus on clean energy, potential benefits are likely to become even more convincing over time.
