Norwich–New London–Willimantic, CT Metro Area: Historic Preservation Meets Modern Technology

The Norwich–New London–Willimantic metro area is making waves in the world of historic preservation with an innovative approach to maintaining its centuries-old architecture. A collaboration between local historians, tech experts, and city planners has resulted in the creation of a cutting-edge 3D mapping and monitoring system for historic buildings.
This system, dubbed “HeritageGuard,” uses a combination of LiDAR technology and AI-powered analysis to create detailed 3D models of historic structures. These models are continuously updated, allowing preservationists to detect even the slightest changes or signs of deterioration in real-time.
The project was spearheaded by Dr. Amanda Foster, a professor of architectural history at Connecticut College. “Our goal is to preserve these irreplaceable pieces of our cultural heritage while minimizing invasive interventions,” Dr. Foster explained.
The system has already been implemented on several key historic sites in the area, including the Leffingwell House Museum in Norwich and the Monte Cristo Cottage in New London. Early results show that HeritageGuard has helped identify and address structural issues before they became serious problems, potentially saving millions in restoration costs.
