Nintendo Switch Lite review: A great handheld, without the Switch part

The Nintendo Switch Lite is the latest addition to the Nintendo console family, offering a convenient and more affordable handheld gaming experience. Launched by Nintendo in 2019, this nifty device is aimed at gamers who prefer handheld gaming on-the-go. But does it live up to its bigger sibling, the original Nintendo Switch? In this review, we take a deep dive into the features, performance, and overall experience of using the Nintendo Switch Lite.

Design and Build

The first thing you’ll notice about the Nintendo Switch Lite is its compact size, measuring just 8.2 x 3.6 inches and weighing a mere 0.61 pounds. This lightweight design makes it easy to carry around and play for extended periods without straining your hands. The Lite comes in several vibrant colors, such as yellow, turquoise, and gray.

Although smaller than the original Switch, the Lite still offers a solid gaming experience. It features a 5.5-inch touch screen display with a 1280 x 720 pixels resolution that provides crisp visuals. However, unlike its predecessor, the Lite does not support TV connectivity; it is strictly handheld.

Controls

The controls on the Nintendo Switch Lite are similar to those on the standard Switch but with minor differences. The left side of the console houses a D-pad instead of separate buttons for easier navigation through menus and games. On the right side reside A/B/X/Y buttons along with R/L/ZR/ZL shoulder buttons at the top.

One notable drawback is that the joycons on the Lite are not removable; they are built-in to offer maximum durability during portable gameplay. Unfortunately, this means that motion-controlled games that require separate joycons will not be possible on this device.

Battery Life

The Nintendo Switch Lite has an improved battery performance compared to its older version. It boasts between 3-7 hours of playtime, depending on the game you are playing. This improvement makes it well suited for long road trips or commutes without worrying about charging.

Game Library

The Nintendo Switch Lite is compatible with a large portion of the original Switch’s game library. However, it is essential to check whether the game supports handheld mode before purchase as the Lite is designed specifically for handheld gaming. For those who own both devices, most games can be shared between them through the online cloud service.

Conclusion

Overall, the Nintendo Switch Lite is an excellent handheld gaming console that provides immersive gameplay experiences without breaking the bank. While it does lack certain features like TV connectivity and detachable controllers, this device is perfect for users who prefer gaming on-the-go. With a strong game library and great battery life, you won’t be disappointed with this portable powerhouse.
