Need to Return a Gift? Here Are All the Major Retailers’ Holiday Return Policies
The season of giving often includes the less talked about season of returning. Whether it’s because of size, preference, or a duplicate item, knowing a retailer’s holiday return policy is valuable information. Here’s a guide to the return policies at some major retailers for that holiday gift that wasn’t quite right.
Amazon: The online retail giant offers an extended holiday return policy. Items shipped by Amazon.com from November 1 through December 31 can typically be returned until January 31 of the following year.
Walmart: Walmart usually allows returns within 90 days after purchase, but for items purchased between October 16 – December 25, the return clock doesn’t start ticking until December 26th.
Target: Target has a standard return policy of 90 days for most items, with an extension for their own brands and gift registry items. Electronics bought in the holiday period might have a shorter return period.
Best Buy: For purchases made in the holiday period, Best Buy typically extends its return window into late January for most products. Customers should check Best Buy’s website for exact dates as they can vary each year.
Macy’s: Macy’s offers an extended holiday return policy on items purchased after November 1st. These gifts can be returned well into January, but there are exclusions and restrictions, so it’s best to confirm directly with Macy’s.
Nordstrom: Nordstrom handles returns on a case-by-case basis, making their return policy more flexible than others. They don’t have a strict deadline for holiday returns but tend to be customer-focused.
Kohl’s: Items purchased at Kohl’s can be returned within 180 days of purchase, giving customers plenty of time post-holidays to make returns. Some electronics must be returned within 30 days, however.
Before heading out or printing that mailing label, it’s important to check the receipt and retailer’s website for specific details about returning gifts. Also consider repackaging details and whether you need proof of purchase or tags intact. Understanding these policies can make your post-holiday routines just a little bit smoother.
