Monster Hunter is getting an open-world RPG spinoff for mobile

Capcom is bringing the thrill of the hunt to mobile devices with Monster Hunter Now, a new open-world RPG spinoff announced recently. This isn’t a simple port; it’s a fully realized mobile experience leveraging augmented reality (AR) technology to blend the familiar Monster Hunter gameplay with the real world. Instead of sprawling, pre-rendered landscapes, players will explore their own neighborhoods and surroundings, encountering and battling iconic monsters in unexpected locations.

The core gameplay loop remains true to the series’ roots: track, hunt, and carve. Players will use their smartphones to locate monsters through the game’s map, utilizing AR to visually integrate these behemoths into their surroundings. Imagine facing down a Rathalos perched atop your neighbor’s roof or a Diablos charging through your local park – the possibilities are as exciting as they are unexpected. While the exact scope of the open world remains to be seen, the potential for unique hunting grounds within the player’s own environment is a game-changer.

Combat will likely involve streamlined controls adapted for mobile play. Expect familiar weapon types and the satisfying crunch of well-placed attacks. The focus on mobile accessibility suggests a more accessible entry point than its console counterparts, though depth and complexity will hopefully remain intact. Crafting and upgrading weapons and armor will undoubtedly play a significant role, rewarding players for successful hunts and encouraging repeated exploration.

The integration of AR presents both opportunities and challenges. While the novelty of encountering monsters in the real world is undeniably appealing, environmental limitations and potential technical glitches are factors Capcom will need to address. Successfully blending the fantastical with the familiar is key to Monster Hunter Now’s success. The potential, however, is huge. If executed well, Monster Hunter Now could redefine the mobile RPG landscape and bring the addictive world of Monster Hunter to a whole new generation of players.
