Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool: What It Is, What It Does, and How to Run It Manually

As the use of technology and the internet continues to grow, so has the prevalence of malware, viruses, and other malicious software that can harm our devices and compromise our personal information. In response to this threat, Microsoft has developed the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) as a way to help users protect their devices from malware and viruses.

So, what exactly is the MSRT and what does it do? The MSRT is a utility built into Windows that scans your device for malware and other malicious software and removes anything that it finds. The tool targets specific malware families and variations each month, based on research from Microsoft’s security team and data from its security products such as Windows Defender.

The MSRT runs automatically as part of the monthly Windows Update process, but you can also run it manually at any time. Running the MSRT manually can help you address any existing malware on your device, and provide an extra layer of protection against future threats.

To run MSRT manually, follow these simple steps:

1. Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.

2. Type ‘MRT’ and press Enter.

3. The Malicious Software Removal Tool will open, and you can select ‘Next’ to begin the scan.

4. The tool will then scan your device for malware and viruses. Once it has detected any malicious software, it will prompt you to remove it.

5. If the tool detects and removes any malware, it will provide a summary of the results of the scan.

It’s important to note that while the MSRT is a powerful tool, it isn’t designed to be a replacement for a comprehensive security solution. To ensure the best possible protection for your device, it’s recommended that you also use a reputable antivirus software and enable Windows Defender, which comes pre-installed on most Windows devices.

In conclusion, the MSRT is a valuable tool that can help protect your device from malware and other malicious software. By running it manually and using it in conjunction with other security measures, you can help keep your devices safe and secure. So, next time you’re looking to give your device an extra security boost, don’t forget about the MSRT!
