Marshall Emberton III Product Review

Introduction

Marshall, a name synonymous with rock ‘n’ roll, has been making waves in the portable audio market for years. Their latest offering, the Marshall Emberton III, released in mid-December 2024, aims to build upon the success of its predecessors while introducing new features for the modern audio enthusiast. This third iteration promises improved sound, longer battery life, and enhanced connectivity options, all wrapped in Marshall’s iconic vintage-inspired design. Let’s dive in to see if the Emberton III lives up to the Marshall legacy.

Design and Build Quality

True to Marshall’s heritage, the Emberton III maintains the classic amp-inspired look that fans have come to love. The speaker is compact, measuring 2.68 x 6.30 x 2.99 inches and weighing just 1.5 pounds, making it highly portable. The exterior features the familiar textured black vinyl covering, brass-finished details, and the iconic Marshall script logo on the front grille.

Build quality is exceptional, with the Emberton III feeling solid and premium in hand. The controls are now fully tactile, with a multi-directional control knob on top that handles power, volume, play/pause, and track navigation. This is a welcome improvement over the touch-sensitive controls of the previous model, offering better feedback and usability, especially in outdoor settings.

The Emberton III boasts an impressive IP67 rating, making it fully dust-proof and water-resistant. It can withstand submersion in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes, a significant upgrade from its predecessor’s IPX7 rating.

Sound Quality

Marshall has always prioritized audio quality, and the Emberton III continues this tradition with some notable improvements. The speaker utilizes Marshall’s True Stereophonic technology, a multi-directional sound system that creates a wider soundstage than you’d expect from a speaker of this size.

Two 2-inch full-range drivers and two passive radiators work together to deliver a powerful and balanced audio experience. The bass response is rich and punchy without overwhelming the mids, while the highs remain crisp and detailed. Rock and guitar-heavy genres shine on this speaker, but it handles a wide range of musical styles with aplomb.

New to the Emberton III is Marshall’s Dynamic Tuning feature. This uses built-in microphones to analyze the speaker’s surroundings and adjust the EQ accordingly, optimizing the sound for different environments. In practice, this works surprisingly well, with noticeable improvements when moving from indoor to outdoor spaces.

The maximum volume has been increased by about 10% compared to the Emberton II, and distortion at high volumes is minimal. While it may not fill a large outdoor space, it’s more than capable of soundtracking a small gathering or providing ample volume for personal listening.

Battery Life and Connectivity

Marshall has significantly improved the battery life with the Emberton III. It now boasts up to 30 hours of playtime on a single charge, up from 20 hours on the previous model. In our tests, we consistently achieved around 28 hours at moderate volume levels. Fast charging is supported, providing 4 hours of playtime from just 20 minutes of charging.

Connectivity has been upgraded to Bluetooth 5.3, ensuring a stable connection and support for the latest audio codecs, including aptX Adaptive for compatible devices. This allows for higher quality wireless audio transmission and lower latency. The Bluetooth range has also been extended to about 40 feet, performing well even with obstacles in between.

Additional Features

The Marshall Bluetooth app has been revamped for the Emberton III, offering more customization options. Users can now access a fully parametric EQ, save custom EQ presets, and adjust the intensity of the Dynamic Tuning feature. The app also allows for firmware updates and battery monitoring.

A new “Stack Mode” feature allows you to wirelessly connect multiple Emberton III speakers (or other compatible Marshall speakers) for a more powerful audio setup. This works seamlessly and is perfect for larger gatherings or creating a multi-room audio system.

The Emberton III also introduces a built-in microphone for hands-free calling, a feature absent in previous models. Call quality is decent, though not exceptional, making it suitable for occasional use.

Conclusion

The Marshall Emberton III represents a significant evolution in Marshall’s portable speaker lineup. It successfully builds upon the strengths of its predecessors while introducing meaningful improvements and new features. The combination of classic Marshall aesthetics, robust build quality, and excellent sound performance makes it a standout option in the premium portable speaker market.

While the price point of $179.99 places it at the higher end of the spectrum, the Emberton III justifies its cost with its superior audio quality, extended battery life, and additional features like Dynamic Tuning and Stack Mode. For those who appreciate Marshall’s rock ‘n’ roll heritage and demand high-quality audio in a portable package, the Emberton III is an excellent choice.

It’s not just a speaker; it’s a statement piece that delivers on both style and substance. Whether you’re a long-time Marshall fan or simply in the market for a top-tier portable Bluetooth speaker, the Emberton III deserves serious consideration. It successfully bridges the gap between Marshall’s storied past and the demands of modern, on-the-go listeners, cementing its place as one of the best portable speakers of 2025.
