In a recent survey conducted by Kearney and Amazon Pay, a whopping 46% of street vendors across 120 Indian cities have adopted digital payments, marking a significant shift towards cashless transactions. The survey, which gathered data from 6,000 consumers and 1,000 merchants, highlights the rapidly changing face of consumer behavior and the growing demand for digital payment options.

The survey revealed that the majority of consumers, 61%, prefer digital payments over cash, citing reasons such as convenience, speed, and security. Additionally, 70% of consumers reported that they are more likely to shop from vendors who accept digital payments. This shift towards digital payments is likely to have a significant impact on the way small and medium-sized businesses operate, particularly in the informal sector.

Street vendors, who have traditionally relied on cash transactions, are now embracing digital payments as a means to streamline their business operations and expand their customer base. In fact, 71% of street vendors reported that they have seen an increase in sales since adopting digital payments. The survey also found that merchants who accept digital payments are more likely to report an increase in customer loyalty and repeat business.

The study highlights the growing importance of digital payment infrastructure in Indian cities. The survey found that 75% of consumers reported that they prefer to use digital payment methods such as UPI, mobile wallets, and card payments, which has led to a significant increase in the adoption of digital payments.

The Indian government has been actively promoting digital transactions through initiatives such as the Digital India program and the rollout of the Unified Payments Interface (UPPI). The survey findings underscore the effectiveness of these initiatives in driving the adoption of digital payments.

The Kearney-Amazon Pay survey provides valuable insights into the changing behavior of Indian consumers and the rapid pace of digital transformation in the country’s informal economy. As the demand for digital payment options continues to grow, it is likely that street vendors will play a crucial role in shaping the future of India’s payments landscape.

In conclusion, the survey findings paint a compelling picture of a country that is rapidly embracing digital payments. The 46% of street vendors who have adopted digital payments are a testament to the growing demand for convenient, secure, and seamless payment options. As the Indian government continues to promote digital payments, it is likely that the digital payment landscape will continue to evolve, offering new opportunities for businesses and consumers alike.
