The automobile industry is in for a shakeup as two popular models, the Jeep Renegade and the Fiat 500X, are scheduled to be phased out by 2024. The decision comes as both car manufacturers and consumers shift their focus towards more eco-friendly and electric vehicle (EV) options.
The Jeep Renegade, a subcompact crossover SUV introduced in 2014, has been facing declining sales for the past few years. Despite its rugged appearance and off-road capabilities, the Renegade couldn’t keep up with the growing demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles. The same challenge was faced by the Fiat 500X, launched in 2015 as a sibling to the well-known Fiat 500 but with added crossover features.
The rise of electric vehicles has played a significant role in this decision. With stricter emissions regulations and an increasing number of countries committing to reducing their carbon footprint, it’s becoming clear that traditional gasoline-powered vehicles need to make way for greener alternatives. Both Jeep and Fiat have plans to release electric variants of their existing models or introduce entirely new EVs over the next few years.
The discontinuation of these compact crossovers doesn’t come as a complete surprise – Stellantis, parent company of both Jeep and Fiat, has publicly announced its aggressive shift towards electrification. The company aims to have more than 40% low-emission vehicle sales in Europe by 2025 – which includes battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and hybrid models.
This trend isn’t limited to just Jeep and Fiat; the entire automobile industry is leaning heavily into EV development. Various established manufacturers are either updating current portfolios with electric options or investing heavily in research on sustainable energy sources.
As we say goodbye to the Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X, it’s important to acknowledge their role in the journeys of many proud owners. The discontinuation of these models is a clear indication of the changing landscape and consumer preferences in the automotive market. We can only hope that future electric variants of beloved models will help transition the industry to a greener tomorrow.
