Issues That Education Leaders Should Avoid

Today, education has been the center of raging debates, and education leaders have not been spared. In addition to the mountain of roles they play, these individuals have to answer to the general public and policymakers. 

Educational leaders need to grow a thick skin. Additionally, they must be firm and analytical to make crucial decisions that affect the institution. These decisions are often for the best interests, but errors in judgment are bound to occur. Here we highlight some of the common mistakes that education leaders make. 

  • Rigidity

Oftentimes, education leaders may find themselves resisting change, clinging to old methods and ideologies simply because they had previously worked. New and potentially better teaching methods or approaches to educating may be rejected, derailing progress.

  • Overlooking potential problems

Education leaders are seen as problem solvers and keen individuals who leave no stone unturned. This is not always the case; they may choose to prioritize one issue over another for reasons such as urgency or perceived significance. A problem ignored becomes an even bigger issue leaving the institution with the task of having to undo the damage caused. It is therefore important that education leaders take each arising issue with seriousness. It also helps to have an efficient team to lessen the burden of having to deal with everything individually.

  • Personal biases and beliefs

Leaders are supposed to be impartial in every way. However, most individuals harbor biases that impact their decisions and attitudes towards certain activities, places, or people. Since schools are meant to be inclusive spaces, educators must be aware of their identities and biases. This knowledge enables them to avoid making questionable decisions.

  • Complacency

Education leaders are susceptible to complacency when they experience constant success. It is a huge mistake to be comfortable with your current position and methods, even if they have proven effective. In a dynamic society, it is essential to keep up with the trend as well as constantly be in pursuit of ways to make improvements.

  • Inability to motivate staff

Leaders are as good as the teams they work with. Motivation does not just entail rewards and praise. It is in developing talent and how leaders associate with school staff. They need to feel heard and included in the decisions that concern them. While you cannot please everyone, it is important to make an effort.
