With the increasing popularity of Apple’s AirTag for tracking personal belongings like keys, wallets, and bags, concerns about privacy and device tracking have risen. While AirTag users can quickly locate their devices if lost or misplaced, there are individuals who might use these trackers for more malicious purposes. In this article, we discuss how to determine if your Android device is being tracked by an AirTag and what steps to take if you suspect unwanted monitoring.

Detecting an Unknown AirTag Nearby

AirTags are designed to work within the Apple ecosystem, making it difficult for them to track Android devices. However, they can still be planted nearby. Some signals can help you identify a potential AirTag tracking your Android device or general surroundings:

1. Unusual Bluetooth activity: The first indicator of a nearby AirTag is the presence of unknown Bluetooth devices constantly attempting to pair with your Android phone. If you notice such occurrences, look into it further.

2. Signal strength: The distance between the AirTag and your device determines Bluetooth signal strength – a higher signal strength may mean a closer proximity.

3. Scanning apps: There are third-party apps available on Google Play Store that can help you scan for suspicious Bluetooth devices, such as BLE Scanner and nRF Connect.

If You Suspect an AirTag is Tracking Your Android

If you find an AirTag that you suspect has been attached deliberately near your Android device or belongings to track you, follow these steps:

1. Disable the AirTag: Remove its small battery by pressing down on the stainless steel cover and twisting counterclockwise to open it.

2. Preserve evidence: If necessary, store any relevant data retrieved from the scanning app or Bluetooth connections in case required.

3. Report to authorities and Apple: If you believe someone is using an AirTag maliciously, report the incident to the appropriate authorities and contact Apple’s support team with the serial number of the AirTag.

Protecting Yourself from Unauthorized Tracking

To increase your security, consider these preventative measures:

1. Routinely check your belongings for unfamiliar objects, such as AirTags or other trackers.

2. Manage Bluetooth connections carefully, and investigate unknown devices trying to pair with your Android.

3. Install a scanning app to regularly check for suspicious Bluetooth signals.

While Apple’s AirTag has many practical uses, it is essential to be aware of its potential misuse. Being proactive in protecting your privacy can safeguard you from unwanted tracking. Regularly scanning for suspicious Bluetooth connections and taking appropriate action if an unknown AirTag is discovered can ensure that your Android device stays secure.
