iRulu BL20 Review: Is a $150 Projector Any Good? This One Isn’t

Introduction

The market for budget projectors is growing, and iRulu has thrown its hat into the ring with the BL20, a projector priced at an affordable $150. With this price tag, it’s no surprise that many consumers are wondering if it’s too good to be true. In this review, we’ll dive into the iRulu BL20 and analyze its performance, design, and overall value for money.

Design & Build Quality

The iRulu BL20 has a simple design with a black ABS plastic housing. It measures 10.2 x 6 x 3.5 inches and weighs 4.85 pounds, making it relatively portable for a budget projector. The focus and keystone adjustment dials on the top panel allow for quick setup, while the rear panel houses the input ports including HDMI, VGA, USB, SD card slot, and audio outputs.

While the initial impression may be positive, it doesn’t take long to see where the cost-cutting took place. The plastic body feels flimsy and prone to damage from accidental drops or knocks. Additionally, despite having adjustable feet at the front and back of the projector, it lacks horizontal adjustments for centering a projected image on screen.

Image Quality & Performance

At first glance, you’d expect that at least some concessions need to be made when paying just $150 for a projector. The iRulu BL20’s performance is definitely one of those concessions. With a native resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, it falls short in delivering high-definition visuals as compared to other projectors in a slightly higher price range.

While text displayed on presentations may appear legible from a distance, images lack crisp details and appear washed out due to suboptimal color saturation and low contrast ratio of 2000:1. The projector struggles in well-lit spaces, meaning you’ll need a completely dark room to obtain the best results.

Audio & Fan Noise

The built-in 3-watt stereo speakers produce a tinny audio output that leaves much to be desired. You’ll want to invest in an external speaker setup if you plan on watching movies or playing games with this projector. Furthermore, the iRulu BL20 is marred by a loud internal fan, which not only distracts viewers from enjoying content but raises concerns about its long-term reliability.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while the low price tag of the iRulu BL20 is tempting, it becomes clear that this budget projector makes too many compromises to deliver a quality viewing experience. With poor image quality, flimsy build, and noisy operation, it’s hard to recommend this projector for serious users. Those looking for a budget-friendly option should consider investing a bit more in a higher-quality brand or explore refurbished options from reputable manufacturers. Ultimately, when it comes to the iRulu BL20 and whether a $150 projector can be any good—this one isn’t.
