I’m a personal trainer — this is the best standing ab exercise that also torches your whole body

As a personal trainer, I’m always on the lookout for exercises that provide maximum benefits with minimal equipment. The standing wood chop is, in my professional opinion, the best standing ab exercise that also engages your entire body.
Here’s why it’s so effective:
- Core engagement: The rotational movement targets your obliques and deep core muscles.
- Full-body workout: It engages your legs, glutes, arms, and shoulders.
- Functional movement: It mimics real-life movements, improving overall strength and stability.
- Cardiovascular benefits: When done with high intensity, it can elevate your heart rate.
To perform the standing wood chop:
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a medicine ball or dumbbell.
- Start with the weight at your left hip.
- In one fluid motion, lift the weight diagonally across your body to above your right shoulder.
- Control the weight back down to the starting position.
- Perform 10-15 reps, then switch sides.
Remember to maintain a stable core and pivot your feet slightly as you rotate. Start with a lighter weight to perfect your form before increasing the challenge.
