As a native New Yorker, when visitors come to the Empire State, they often think of the iconic skyline of New York City, the Statue of Liberty, or the bustling streets of Manhattan. However, beyond the glittering lights of the Big Apple lies a treasure trove of hidden gems that are often overshadowed by the city’s grandeur. From pristine natural wonders to charming small towns, New York State is brimming with destinations that deserve a spot on any traveler’s bucket list.
One such gem is Letchworth State Park, famously known as the “Grand Canyon of the East.” It offers stunning views of gorges and waterfalls that rival those found anywhere in the country. The park’s 14,427 acres are excellent for hiking, bird-watching, and whitewater rafting. Photographers and nature lovers alike will be captivated by its three major waterfalls — the Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls — which can be viewed from various lookout points around the park.
Another must-visit location is the Adirondack Mountains. Unlike other popular mountain destinations overcrowded with tourists, the Adirondacks offer a peaceful retreat amidst lakes and peaks. Lake Placid, a two-time Winter Olympics host, provides year-round outdoor activities from skiing and ice-skating in winter to canoeing and hiking in summer. The charm of this area isn’t just in its natural beauty but also in its quaint villages filled with local shops and eateries.
For a truly unique experience away from typical tourist spots, visit Boldt Castle on Heart Island in the Thousand Islands region. This turn-of-the-century castle showcases a tragic love story and unparalleled architecture. Accessible only by boat, visitors can explore this six-story castle and its surrounding grounds including gardens, stone structures, and even a drawbridge.
Wine enthusiasts should not miss out on exploring the Finger Lakes Wine Country. With over 100 wineries dotting the Finger Lakes’ scenic countryside, it’s not only an oenophile’s paradise but also offers breathtaking views. Visitors can indulge in wine tasting while enjoying laid-back picnics or hot air balloon rides over rolling hills.
Lastly, hidden within Cooperstown is not only the Baseball Hall of Fame but also Glimmerglass Lake – a name as poetic as its vista. Tranquil and relatively undisturbed, Glimmerglass offers canoeing or simply serene moments staring across mirror-like water reflections that provide an entirely different kind of home run.
Enrapturing state parks steeped in grandeur; serene lakes offering peaceful escapades; regal historical structures harking back to love stories lost—I am proud to claim New York State as my home not because of its famed urban giant but for these less-sung wonders that offer memories just as indelible beyond NYC’s skyline.
