Illinois Solar Panel Incentives: Rebates, Tax Credits, and More

Illinois has shown commitment to sustainable energy through a series of incentives designed to encourage residents and businesses to invest in solar panel installations. Not only do these incentives reduce the immediate financial impact of such investments, but they also contribute to the long-term savings for users and support environmental stewardship.

Rebates:

The state’s popular solar rebate program allows for a certain dollar amount per watt of installed solar capacity. This immediately reduces the installation costs by awarding property owners a direct rebate after the installation is completed.

State Tax Credits:

Illinois provides a state tax credit specifically for renewable energy installations. This incentive allows residents to deduct a portion of the cost of their solar panel system from their state tax liability, providing substantial savings over time.

Net Metering:

Net metering policies are essential for solar panel owners in Illinois. These policies enable users to receive credit on their utility bills for any excess power that their solar panels produce and send back to the grid. Essentially, it allows customers to offset the cost of power drawn from the utility with their own, renewable production.

Renewable Energy Credits (RECs):

When you install a solar panel system in Illinois, you generate RECs for every megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity produced. These RECs can then be sold on the market, providing an additional income stream for residential and commercial producers alike.

Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC):

On top of state-specific benefits, Illinois residents are also eligible for the Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit. This significant tax credit accounts for a percentage of the cost of installing a solar energy system and is available to both residential and commercial customers.

Property Tax Exemption:

To make sure that installing solar panels doesn’t increase your property taxes due to added home value, Illinois offers a property tax exemption for renewable energy systems. This means you can improve your home with solar panels without worrying about an increased property tax bill.

Solar Renewable Energy Credit (SREC):

Similar to RECs, SRECs are generated through solar production. In Illinois, this program operates with specific goals and compliance fees that create a market demand for SRECs, therefore providing financial return for those who produce solar energy.

Performance-Based Incentives (PBI):

Certain programs offer performance-based incentives where payments are made based upon the actual kWh or MWh of electricity produced by a solar PV system over time. This tends to provide an excellent return on investment depending on how much energy your system generates.

These incentives underscore why Illinois is an attractive place for installing solar panels. Between upfront rebates, ongoing tax incentives, net metering benefits, and opportunities to sell generated renewable credits—going solar in Illinois is not only environmentally sound but also economically advantageous.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
