Iconic Characters of Mortal Kombat – From Scorpion to Mileena

The Mortal Kombat franchise is home to some of the most recognizable and beloved characters in fighting game history. These fighters, with their unique abilities, compelling backstories, and iconic designs, have become cultural touchstones that transcend the games themselves.

Scorpion, with his signature “Get over here!” spear attack, is perhaps the most iconic character in the series. Originally a ninja of the Shirai Ryu clan, Scorpion was killed by Sub-Zero of the rival Lin Kuei clan. Resurrected as a hellspawn ninja, Scorpion’s quest for vengeance drives much of the early series’ plot. His fiery attacks and skull-faced appearance make him instantly recognizable.

Sub-Zero, Scorpion’s nemesis and equal in popularity, is known for his ice-based attacks. The mantle of Sub-Zero has been held by two characters in the series’ lore: the elder Sub-Zero (Bi-Han) who becomes Noob Saibot, and his younger brother (Kuai Liang) who takes up the name to honor him. Sub-Zero’s freezing abilities and ninja attire make him a fan favorite.

Raiden, the God of Thunder and protector of Earthrealm, serves as a mentor figure in the series. His ability to teleport and control lightning, combined with his iconic conical hat, make him one of the most distinctive characters in the roster.

Liu Kang, often considered the main protagonist of the series, is a Shaolin monk chosen to represent Earthrealm in the tournament. Known for his bicycle kick and dragon fire attacks, Liu Kang embodies the traditional martial arts hero.

Sonya Blade, one of the first female characters in the series, represents the Special Forces. Her military background and no-nonsense attitude make her a stark contrast to the more fantastical characters in the roster.

Johnny Cage, a Hollywood action star turned fighter, brings a touch of humor to the series. His arrogance and showboating are balanced by his genuine heroism as the story progresses.

Kano, the leader of the Black Dragon crime syndicate, serves as a recurring villain. His cybernetic enhancements, including his iconic red eye laser, make him a formidable opponent.

Goro, the four-armed Shokan prince, was one of the first boss characters in the series. His imposing presence and unblockable attacks made him a memorable challenge for players.

Shang Tsung, the soul-stealing sorcerer, is one of the primary antagonists of the series. His ability to morph into other characters makes him both a narrative and gameplay wildcard.

Kitana, the 10,000-year-old princess of Edenia, has become one of the most popular female characters in the series. Her fan-based attacks and complex storyline involving her evil clone Mileena have made her a fan favorite.

Speaking of Mileena, this twisted clone of Kitana, created by Shang Tsung, has become an icon in her own right. Her combination of grace and savagery, along with her distinctive mouth full of sharp teeth, make her one of the most visually striking characters in the series.

Jax, with his cybernetic arms, represents another aspect of the Special Forces. His strength-based attacks and loyal friendship with Sonya Blade make him a stalwart hero in the Mortal Kombat universe.

Kung Lao, Liu Kang’s Shaolin brother, is known for his razor-rimmed hat. His acrobatic fighting style and rivalry with Liu Kang add depth to both characters.

Reptile, the last of the Saurian race, began as a hidden character and evolved into a fan favorite. His acid and invisibility powers make him a unique fighter in the roster.
