How to Write a Feature Article

Introduction

Feature articles are an engaging and informative form of storytelling that provides readers with an in-depth look at a subject. Whether it’s profiling an individual, exploring an issue, or showcasing an event, a well-crafted feature article can captivate and educate your audience. In this article, we will guide you through the essential steps to writing an excellent feature article.

Research Your Topic

The first step in writing a feature article is to choose your topic carefully. Pick a subject that genuinely interests you, as this passion will translate into your writing. Once you have your topic, conduct thorough research to gain a deep understanding of the issue or person you’re going to write about. This research may involve interviews, internet searches, visiting relevant locations, or delving into archives.

Choose Your Angle

Once you have thoroughly researched your subject, decide on the angle from which you will approach the story. A good angle adds a unique perspective and makes your feature article stand out. Consider what questions remain unanswered or what aspects of the subject haven’t been explored.

Develop Your Hook

A captivating introduction is crucial for grabbing your reader’s attention. Known as the “hook,” this opening invites the reader into your story with an intriguing statement, question, or anecdote. Make it clear from the beginning what your feature will unveil.

Use Storytelling Techniques

Feature articles differ from hard news articles in that they place emphasis on narrative devices such as scenes, descriptions, and dialogue. Use these techniques to immerse your readers in the story and make them feel personally invested in its outcome. Varying the pacing of your article can add tension and create more opportunities for impactful storytelling.

Include Relevant Quotes

Including quotes from primary sources lends credibility to your feature article and adds depth by showcasing different perspectives on the subject. Ensure that quotes are relevant and support the main narrative without detracting from it. Properly attribute your quotes to their sources and verify their authenticity before using them in your article.

Maintain a Consistent Voice and Tone

While writing a feature article, maintain a consistent voice and tone throughout the piece. This gives your readers a sense of continuity and coherence. Take time to reflect on the style you want to use – whether it’s casual, formal, humorous, or solemn – and ensure it serves the story you’re trying to tell.

Revise Your Draft

After writing your feature article, it’s essential to revise and edit your work thoroughly. Identify any areas where the story becomes unclear or confusing for readers. Pay attention to grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure throughout your revisions.

Gather Feedback

Before submitting or publishing your feature article, gather feedback from colleagues or trusted friends who can offer constructive criticism. This third-party perspective can provide valuable insights into areas that may be unclear or because of bias.

Add Visual Elements

Lastly, when possible, accompany your feature article with relevant visuals such as images or infographics that enhance the reader’s understanding of the subject matter. These visual elements can add depth and context while breaking up large blocks of text for easier reading.

Conclusion

Writing an engaging feature article takes time, effort, and practice. By following these steps and remaining committed to the craft of storytelling, you can create captivating content that captures audiences’ attention and effectively communicates an insightful narrative about your selected topic.
