How to Wear a Tuxedo: 14 Steps

1. Choose the right tuxedo: Begin by selecting a tuxedo that fits your body type and personal style. Classic black or midnight blue are popular choices, and you can opt for a single or double-breasted jacket depending on your preference.

2. Select a shirt: Pair your tuxedo with a crisp, white dress shirt. It should have a pleated front and French cuffs for a classic look.

3. Add the collar: Select either a wingtip or turndown collar according to your style preferences. Wingtip collars are more traditional, while turndown collars offer a modern touch.

4. Choose your tie: Pick between a bow tie or long necktie to complement your tuxedo. A black satin bow tie is considered the most elegant option.

5. Fold the pocket square: Add flair to your ensemble with a white pocket square folded neatly into the breast pocket of your jacket.

6. Select cufflinks: Choose understated cufflinks in silver or gold-tone metal that coordinate with your other accessories.

7. Put on the pants: Tuxedo pants should have a satin stripe along the side seam and no belt loops or cuffs. Opt for suspenders instead of a belt to maintain a clean, tailored look.

8. Add the cummerbund (optional): While not required, wearing a cummerbund can add formality and visual interest to your tuxedo ensemble.

9. Choose the right shoes: Opt for polished black patent leather oxfords or loafers to complete your look.

10. Plan for inclement weather: For cooler temperatures, consider wearing an overcoat in black or charcoal grey made of luxurious fabric such as cashmere or wool.

11. Accessorize with studs (optional): You may choose to use black onyx or mother-of-pearl studs in place of standard buttons on your shirt’s placket.

12. Style your hair: Opt for a clean, classic hairstyle that complements your tuxedo. Consider getting a professional haircut to ensure your look is perfect.

13.   Groom yourself: Freshen up with a shave or trim and wear an elegant, subtle cologne for the finishing touch.

14. Don’t forget the socks: Wear high-quality, black dress socks that reach above the calf to ensure your ankles remain covered when you sit down.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
