How To Warm Store-Bought Tortillas For The Best Possible Flavor
Store-bought tortillas can often lack the fresh taste and warmth of those made from scratch, leaving much to be desired in flavor and texture. Fortunately, with a few simple techniques, you can elevate your store-bought tortillas to a level that rivals homemade ones. Here’s how you can warm store-bought tortillas for the best possible flavor:
Skillet Method: This is perhaps the most traditional method of warming tortillas. Warm a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place a tortilla on the skillet for about 15-30 seconds until you see it start to puff up slightly. Flip it with tongs or a spatula and warm the other side for another 15-30 seconds. The direct heat will char the tortillas slightly, giving them a more authentic taste.
Gas Stove Flame: If you have a gas stove, this method works quickly and imparts a nice charred flavor. Hold the tortilla with tongs and wave it over an open flame for a few seconds on each side until it is warmed through and just begins to char. Watch closely to avoid burning.
Oven Method: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Wrap a stack of tortillas in foil and place them in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes. This method is great if you need to warm up many tortillas at once, as it heats them evenly and keeps them soft.
Microwave Method: If you are short on time, dampen a paper towel with water and wring out any excess moisture. Wrap the stack of tortillas in the damp paper towel and then place inside a microwave-safe plastic bag but do not seal it (or use microwave-safe plastic wrap). Microwave on high for about 30 seconds to a minute, depending on how many tortillas you have. The steam created by the damp paper towel will keep them moist.
Wet Kitchen Towel Method: Dampen a kitchen towel with water, wrap your stack of tortillas in it, place the wrapped stack on a microwave-safe plate, cover it with another plate upside down, and microwave it for about one minute.
Each of these methods has its benefits, depending on what texture you prefer in your tortilla—crispy or soft—and how many you need to warm at once. Experiment with these techniques to see which one best suits your preferences and gives your store-bought tortillas that freshly made flavor!
