How to Use Your Old iMac as a Monitor

If you own an old iMac that you no longer use, you may be able to give it a new lease on life by converting it into a monitor. Doing so will allow you to use it for a variety of purposes, including as a secondary display, a gaming screen or as a media centre. Here’s how to use your old iMac as a monitor.

Step 1: Check for compatibility

First things first, you must ensure that you have an iMac that is compatible with the target computer. Keep in mind that only iMacs released from 2009 to 2014 can be used as external monitors. If you have a more recent iMac, unfortunately, you won’t be able to use it as a monitor.

Step 2: Obtain a compatible cable

Once you have verified that you have the correct iMac model, the next step is to obtain a compatible cable. Thunderbolt and Mini DisplayPort cables can be used to connect iMacs to other computers as external monitors. Depending on the target computer, you may need to purchase a Thunderbolt to HDMI or Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.

Step 3: Determine the target computer

You’ll also need to determine which computer you will be using to connect to the iMac. If you have a newer Mac, such as a MacBook Pro or iMac, you can use a Thunderbolt cable to connect the two. If you have a Windows PC, you can connect the iMac using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter plugged into the computer’s HDMI port.

Step 4: Connect the iMac to the target computer

Connect the Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort cable to the iMac’s Thunderbolt port, then connect the other end of the cable to the target computer. If you’re using an adapter, plug the Mini DisplayPort end into the iMac, and the HDMI end into your computer’s HDMI port. The iMac should now be identified as an additional display on your target computer.

Step 5: Configure the display settings

Now that the iMac is connected to the computer, we need to configure the display settings. On a Mac, go to the Apple menu and select System Preferences, then click Displays. From there, choose Arrangement, and make sure that the Arrangement window shows the screens side-by-side. You can also set which screen is the primary display.

On a Windows PC, right-click on your desktop and then choose Display settings. From there, you can select the iMac display and configure settings like the resolution, orientation, and refresh rate.

Step 6: Enjoy using your old iMac as a monitor

Once everything is set up, your old iMac is now a functional external display. You can use it for a variety of purposes, such as extending the display of your laptop or desktop PC, connecting to a gaming console or a media player, and more.

In conclusion, with proper compatibility, cables, and configuration settings, your old iMac can have a new life as an external monitor. Not only is this an eco-friendly way to repurpose an old device, but it can also save you money on purchasing a new monitor.
