Traveling in an RV gives you the freedom and convenience of bringing the comforts of home along for the ride. One such comfort is having access to hot water right at your fingertips. In this article, we will discuss how to use an RV water heater, ensuring you always have access to warm water, whether for showering, washing dishes, or doing laundry.

1. Understanding Your RV Water Heater

First, it’s essential to know what type of water heater your RV has. There are a few different types on the market:

– Propane-based heaters

– Electric and propane combination heaters

– Electric tankless or on-demand heaters

Every heater requires specific instructions for operation, so knowing the type you have is crucial.

2. Getting Started: Prepping Your Heater

After determining your heater type, follow these general steps to prepare it for use:

– Make sure the fresh water tanks are filled with water.

– Open all hot and cold-water faucets in your RV.

– If relevant, confirm that your propane tank valve is open.

Once you’ve taken these initial steps, follow the specific instructions for your water heater type.

3. Propane-Based Water Heaters

a) Locate the propane tank’s valve and turn it on if it isn’t already.

b) Turn on the device itself using the control panel or a remote switch typically located inside the RV.

c) The heater’s ignition should spark, and you’ll hear a distinct sound as the flame ignites.

Allow a couple of minutes for the water within the tank to heat up. The temperature will typically range from 120°F – 130°F.

4. Combo: Electric and Propane Combination Heaters

To utilize both energy sources to heat your water:

a) First, ensure that there’s a 110-volt power source available if you want to run it on electricity.

b) Double-check that your propane tank is open and the water heater switch is turned on.

c) Choose the power source you’d like to use on the control panel. Both modes can be used simultaneously for faster heating.

5. Electric Tankless or On-Demand Heaters

Tankless water heaters are energy-efficient and save space, providing hot water only when needed.

a) Ensure that your RV is connected to a 110-volt power source.

b) Locate your RV’s on-demand water heater switch and turn it on.

c) Choose the desired temperature using the control panel.

Now that you’ve activated your water heater, wait for a few moments while it heats up to the chosen temperature. With no tank to heat, you’ll enjoy hot water quickly and continuously.

6. Regular Maintenance

Following manufacturer guidelines for regular maintenance will ensure your RV water heater remains in optimal working order for years to come. Don’t forget to drain and clean the tank regularly, check for leaks, and monitor electrical connections for signs of wear or corrosion.

In conclusion, knowing how to use your RV’s water heater correctly is crucial for comfortable travels. By familiarizing yourself with your heater type and following proper instructions, you’ll have access to hot water whenever you need it during your adventures!
