Introduction

Upholstering a bench is a fantastic way to breathe new life into an old piece of furniture or customize a bench to match your interior design. With some basic tools and supplies, you can transform a plain bench into a comfortable and stylish seating option. In this article, we will provide a step-by-step guide on how to upholster a bench.

Materials and Tools Needed:

– Bench

– Upholstery fabric

– Foam padding

– Batting

– Staple gun and staples

– Scissors

– Measuring tape

– Marker/pen

– Straight edge/ruler

Step 1: Choose Your Fabric and Padding

Begin by selecting the upholstery fabric and foam padding you want to use for your bench. Keep in mind that upholstery fabric should be durable, stain-resistant, and able to withstand daily wear-and-tear.

Additionally, choose a foam padding that is at least the same thickness as the existing cushion (if any) or thicker if you prefer a more comfortable seating surface.

Step 2: Remove Existing Cushion (if necessary)

If your bench already has an old cushion or upholstery that needs removal, carefully remove the staples or fasteners holding it in place, using pliers if necessary. Once removed, use the old cushion as a template for cutting your new foam padding.

Step 3: Cut Foam Padding

Place your foam padding on a flat surface and use the measuring tape and marker to mark the dimensions needed for your bench cushion. If you have removed an existing cushion, use it as a template for the cutting process. Use scissors or an electric knife to cut the foam padding accordingly.

Step 4: Cut Batting and Fabric

Next, lay out the batting on a flat surface. Place the foam padding in the center of the batting. Cut out enough batting so that it covers not only the foam cushion but also has a few extra inches on every side, which will be used to wrap around the edges. Repeat this step for the upholstery fabric, ensuring that you have sufficient material to cover the cushion and wrap it around the bench’s underside.

Step 5: Attach Batting

Lay your cut batting on a flat surface, place the foam padding on top in the center, and position the bench upside down right above it. Begin by pulling one edge of the batting over the cushion and attach it to the bench’s underside using a staple gun. Make sure to pull tightly so that there are no wrinkles or bulges on the surface of the cushion. Staple every few inches to secure it firmly in place. Repeat this process for all four sides, making sure to fold in at corners neatly.

Step 6: Attach Upholstery Fabric

Following a similar process as with attaching batting, lay out your upholstery fabric with its wrong side facing up. Place the bench upside down with its padded side facing down onto your fabric. Pull one side of the fabric tightly over the edge of the bench and secure it using staples. Repeat for all four sides and make sure corners are neatly folded.

Step 7: Finalize Upholstery

After you have securely attached both batting and upholstery fabric, carefully trim away any excess material from underneath your bench. Additionally, you can use fabric tacks or decorative trim to add finishing touches or hide any visible staples.

Conclusion

With these simple steps, you now know how to upholster a bench and can transform any drab piece of furniture into an attractive focal point for your home. Not only is it an enjoyable DIY project, but it is also a cost-effective way of updating your living space while adding comfort and style.
