How to Unmould a Jelly: 9 Steps

Unmoulding a jelly can be a tricky process, as it often involves delicate handling to avoid breaking or damaging the final dessert. Follow these simple nine steps to successfully unmould a jelly without any issues.

1.Prepare the mould: Before making the jelly, ensure that the mould is clean and dry. For easier removal later on, lightly grease the inside of the mould with some flavourless oil or spray.

2.Create the jelly mixture: Follow your chosen jelly recipe to mix the ingredients and dissolve them completely in warm water. Once thoroughly combined, pour the mixture into your prepared mould.

3.Allow time for setting: Place the filled mould in your refrigerator for at least 3-4 hours, or overnight if possible, until the jelly is fully set.

4.Test readiness: To see if your jelly is set, press gently with your fingertip against the surface of the dessert. If it springs back into place without leaving any residue on your finger, it’s ready for unmoulding.

5.Prepare a warm water bath: Fill a bowl or basin with warm water, ensuring that it is deep enough to immerse most of the mould but doesn’t spill over.

6.Dip the mould into warm water: Carefully lower your jelly mould into the warm water bath and let it sit for about 10 seconds. This will slightly melt the outer layer of the jelly and help release it from all sides of your mould.

7.Remove excess moisture: Lift the mould out of warm water quickly and wipe away any excess water from its outer surface with a clean towel.

8.Loosen edges with a knife or spatula: Run a thin knife or small spatula around the internal edges of your mould to break the surface tension between jelly and mould further.

9.The critical step – Invert and unmould: Place an appropriately sized serving plate on top of your mould, then swiftly and confidently flip the mould and plate together. Gently tap or shake the mould until you hear or feel the jelly release and drop onto the plate. Carefully lift the mould off the dessert, revealing your beautifully unmoulded jelly.

Following these steps will ensure that your jelly remains intact and presentable, ready for you to enjoy with family and friends. Practice makes perfect, so don’t worry if your first few attempts aren’t perfect – with each one you’ll gain more confidence and skill in this delicate task.
