How to Test Amber Gemstones: 7 Steps

Amber, a natural fossil resin, has been used as a precious gemstone for thousands of years. Its stunning hues and unique appearance make it desirable in jewelry and decorative items. However, due to its popularity, fake amber has become increasingly prevalent in the market. To ensure you have an authentic piece, follow these seven steps to test amber gemstones.

1. Visual Inspection

Start by examining the gemstone with the naked eye. Authentic amber will have inclusions like insects, plants, or tiny air bubbles. Fake amber often has perfect-looking inclusions that appear staged or too large.

2. The Touch Test

Hold the amber in your hand and take note of its temperature. Real amber will warm up when held, while artificial materials like plastic or glass will remain cold.

3. The Magnet Test

Amber has a low level of conductivity and responds weakly to magnetic fields. Bring a strong magnet near the gemstone – if it’s attracted to the magnet, it’s likely not authentic amber.

4. The Saltwater Test

Fill a container with saltwater (2-3 tablespoons of salt per cup of water). Place the suspected amber in the solution and watch its behavior. Genuine amber will float in saltwater while imitation materials will sink.

5. Scratch Test

Using a needle or a pin, gently scratch an inconspicuous area on the gemstone. If it leaves a white chalky mark, it’s probably authentic amber since its composition is softer than most imitations like plastic or glass.

6. The Hot Needle Test

Heat the tip of a needle or pin and delicately touch it to an inconspicuous area of the gemstone. Real amber will release a piney scent when heated, whereas fake amber made from plastic materials can emit acrid fumes.

7. UV Light Test

Under ultraviolet light (black light), authentic amber will emit a blue or greenish-blue glow, while fake amber or other resins may not react to the UV light or exhibit a different color.

Always perform multiple tests to ensure the accuracy of your results and avoid damaging valuable pieces whenever possible. Remember that if you are uncertain about the authenticity of an amber gemstone, it’s best to consult with an expert. By conducting these simple tests, you can confirm the authenticity of your amber gemstone and appreciate its timeless beauty with confidence.
