Supercooling, or the process of cooling a liquid below its freezing point without turning it into a solid, is a fascinating scientific phenomenon. Water, for example, remains liquid even at temperatures below its freezing point when it doesn’t come into contact with solid ice nuclei. In this article, you’ll learn how to supercool water in 11 easy steps.

1. Choose a plastic bottle: Select a clean and empty plastic bottle as your container. Glass bottles are not recommended because they can break easily under extreme temperature conditions.

2. Use purified water: Supercooling is most effective with purified or distilled water since impurities and minerals in tap water may interfere with the process.

3. Fill the bottle: Pour the purified water into the bottle, leaving about an inch of space at the top to allow for expansion during the freezing process.

4. Seal the bottle: Screw on the cap tightly to prevent air from entering or escaping the container.

5. Place a thermometer in your freezer: To monitor and maintain the temperature accurately during the supercooling process, place an accurate thermometer inside your freezer.

6. Adjust freezer temperature:Set your freezer’s temperature between -15°C and -20°C (5°F and -4°F). This range is optimal for supercooling water.

7. Gently place the bottle in the freezer: Ensuring minimal disturbance to the water, gently place your plastic bottle containing purified water into the freezer.

8. Monitor temperature and time: Frequently check your thermometer to ensure the temperature stays within range(-15°C and -20°C). Supercooling typically occurs within 2-4 hours, but this time may vary depending on your freezer’s efficiency and other factors.

9. Observe carefully for signs of supercooling: As supercooling occurs, you may notice that the water becomes slightly viscous with bubbles forming around any surface irregularities. You can lightly touch the bottle to feel these changes.

10. Remove the bottle carefully: When you observe signs of supercooling, carefully take out the bottle from the freezer. Be cautious not to disrupt the supercooled water, as any disturbance could cause it to freeze instantly.

11. Instant freeze demonstration: Finally, you can demonstrate the supercooling phenomenon by gently striking the bottle against a hard surface or pouring the water onto a tray of ice cubes. The supercooled water will freeze instantly upon contact with ice or solid surfaces.

By following these 11 steps, you can easily create and demonstrate supercooled water at home. It’s a fun and educational way to showcase an intriguing scientific phenomenon with simple materials!
