How to String a Recurve Bow

A recurve bow is a classic and elegant weapon that has been in existence for centuries, and learning how to string one is an essential skill for any archer. In this article, we will guide you through the process of stringing a recurve bow with ease and safety.
Step 1: Gather your equipment
You will need the following items to string your recurve bow:
1. Bowstring: Ensure you have the correct length and type of string for your bow.
2. Bow stringer or stringing aid: This helps make the process easier and safer.
3. Protective gear: A high-quality arm guard and finger tab are recommended to ensure safety while shooting.
Step 2: Prepare your bow
Place your bowstring on the ground with the two loops facing up. Identify which loop is bigger – that’s the top loop. Insert the bottom loop into the groove in the lower limb tip (called a nock) of your bow, leaving about two inches from the end.
Step 3: Attach the top loop
Slide the larger loop onto the upper limb of your bow, slightly past its nocks. The serving area (the central section with thick thread protection) should be over the arrow rest area.
Step 4: Attach the bow stringer
There are two types of bow stringers – one with a single pocket and another with two pockets.
For a single-pocket stringer:
1. Attach the larger pocket over the bottom limb tip, covering both limb tip and string loop.
2. Hook the saddle on top of the limb tip, ensuring it covers both limb tip and top loop.
For a double-pocket stringer:
1. Attach each pocket to their respective limb tips, covering both tips and loops.
Step 5: Step on the bowstringer
With one hand holding your bow’s grip, step on the bowstringer firmly with both feet, shoulder-width apart. The middle of the bowstringer should be under the arch of your feet.
Step 6: Bend your bow
Pull the bow’s riser (the handle part) up while keeping the bottom limb pressed against the ground with the help of the bow stringer. This will bend the limbs, creating enough slack to slide the top loop into its nock.
Step 7: Secure the loops
Slide the top loop down into its nock and ensure it sits properly in place. Check that both loops are firmly seated in their respective nocks.
Step 8: Unhook and remove stringer
Once both loops are secure, slowly release tension on your recurve bow by lowering it to the ground. Unhook and remove the bow stringer from your bow.
Step 9: Double-check for safety
Inspect both string loops to verify they’re securely seated in their nocks, ensuring that your bow is fully strung and ready for use.
In conclusion, learning how to string a recurve bow is essential for any archer. With practice and a focus on safety, you can quickly become proficient at this necessary skill. Remember to always use a proper stringing aid or tool and ensure you’re using a suitable string for your specific recurve bow. Happy shooting!
