How to Store Jerky: 8 Steps

Storing jerky properly is crucial for maintaining its taste, texture, and longevity. Whether you are a seasoned jerky connoisseur or someone new to this tasty snack, these eight simple steps will help ensure your jerky stays fresh and delicious.

1. Let it cool: Before storing, allow your freshly made or unpacked jerky to cool down to room temperature. This helps prevent condensation from forming inside the storage container, which can cause the jerky to spoil prematurely.

2. Choose airtight containers: Use airtight containers or resealable plastic bags to store your jerky. Oxygen exposure can lead to moisture build-up and spoilage, so it’s essential to choose storage options that minimize air contact.

3. Remove excess air: When placing jerky in resealable bags or containers, be sure to press out any excess air before sealing. This can help prolong the freshness by reducing oxygen exposure.

4. Keep it dry: Ensure your storage area is dry and free of excess moisture since humidity can adversely affect the jerky’s quality. It’s also a good practice to include desiccant packets or silica gel packs in your storage container or bag to absorb any lingering moisture.

5. Cool storage temperature: Store the jerky in a cool place like pantry or cupboard away from direct sunlight and heat sources, ideally between 50°F and 60°F (10°C and 16°C).

6. Divide large batches: If you have a large batch of jerky, consider dividing it into smaller portions for better preservation. This allows you to open and consume one portion at a time while keeping the rest sealed and fresh.

7. Monitor expiration dates: Always check the expiration date on store-bought jerky or follow the recommended storage guidelines for homemade versions. Generally, unopened store-bought jerky can last up to one year, while homemade jerky can last up to one month if stored properly.

8. Refrigerate or freeze for long-term storage: If you plan on storing your jerky for an extended period, consider placing it in the refrigerator or freezer to slow down any potential spoilage. Remember to let it thaw and reach room temperature before consuming.

By following these eight steps, you can ensure your jerky remains fresh and tasty for as long as possible, making it the perfect savory snack at home or on-the-go adventures.
