How to Steam Lobster

Introduction

Steaming a lobster is a classic and delicious way to cook this succulent seafood. It’s simple, relatively fast, and allows the natural flavors of lobster to shine through. This guide will teach you how to steam lobsters like a pro, ensuring that your dining experience will be both enjoyable and unforgettable.

Materials Needed

– Fresh live lobsters

– A large pot with a tight-fitting lid

– A steamer basket or metal colander

– Tongs

– Butter and lemon for serving

Step 1: Choose the Right Lobster

When selecting a lobster, make sure it’s fresh and alive. The ideal lobster should be energetic and responsive when touched. Don’t pick up a sluggish or limp lobster as its health might affect the taste and quality of your meal.

Step 2: Prepare Your Equipment

Fill the large pot with an inch or two of water and bring it to a rolling boil. Place the steamer basket or metal colander inside the pot. Make sure that the water doesn’t touch the bottom of your steaming device.

Step 3: Prepare the Lobster

Before you place the lobster in the pot, place it in the freezer for about 10 minutes to calm it down. This will make handling easier and more humane. After this, take your live lobster and rinse it under cold running water to wash away any debris on its shell.

Step 4: Place Lobster in Steamer Basket

Using tongs, gently place one live lobster at a time into the steamer basket or metal colander with its head facing down towards the bottom. Be careful not to overcrowd the pot.

Step 5: Steam Time Calculation

For every pound of lobster, steam for about 9 minutes. Add 3 minutes for each additional half-pound. For example, if your lobster weighs 1.5 pounds, steam it for 12 minutes (9 + 3 = 12).

Step 6: Steaming

Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid to trap the steam inside, where the lobster will cook. Start timing as soon as you close the lid and do not remove it during the cooking process.

Step 7: Check Lobster’s Doneness

Once the steaming time is up, gently grab the lobster with tongs and quickly check its color. A fully cooked lobster should have a bright red shell. If the lobster is not fully red or appears undercooked, return it to the steamer basket for an additional minute and check again.

Step 8: Serve Immediately

When the lobster is cooked to perfection, serve it immediately with melted butter and lemon wedges. Lobster tastes best when it’s piping hot and fresh out of the steamer.

Conclusion

Steaming lobster is a method that allows you to enjoy all of its rich, delicate flavors in their purest form. By following these simple steps, you’ll be able to perfectly steam a lobster like a professional chef every time. Happy feasting!
