1. Determine your niche: Before you begin, decide on the specific type of freelancing work you want to focus on, such as web design, writing, or marketing.

2. Research the market: Investigate the current demand for your skills and determine how much you can charge based on industry rates and your experience.

3. Build a portfolio: Create a collection of previous work samples that showcase your abilities. This can include personal projects, volunteer work or paid gigs.

4. Establish an online presence: Set up a professional website and social media profiles that highlight your skills and connect with potential clients.

5. Hone your skills: Always be willing to invest time in learning and improving in order to stay competitive in your chosen field.

6. Set clear goals: Define what success means to you as a freelancer and create a roadmap to help you reach those goals.

7. Develop a business plan: Outline your approach to marketing, pricing, and other aspects of running a freelance business.

8. Register your business: Depending on local laws, register your business as a sole proprietorship, LLC or other entity to operate legally.

9. Create a financial plan: Budget for expenses like insurance, taxes and equipment, and establish a process for invoicing and tracking payments from clients.

10. Network with other professionals: Attend events, join online communities or collaborate on projects with other freelancers to expand your network and gain leads on potential clients.

11. Reach out to potential clients: Cold email or call prospective clients directly to introduce yourself and pitch your services.

12. Apply for freelance jobs: Populate online job boards, marketplaces and platforms specific to your field with applications for open projects or contract positions.

13. Develop a solid contract: Use standardized contracts as templates for outlining the details of projects including fees, deadlines, revisions and rights.

14 Manage time effectively: Prioritize tasks, create a work schedule and set boundaries between personal and professional life to maximize productivity.

15. Growth through client feedback: Solicit feedback from clients on a regular basis and use the insights to improve your skills and services. Use positive testimonials for your online profiles or portfolio to attract new clients.

About Us

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject. From time to time, I will invite other voices to weigh in on important issues in EdTech. We hope to provide a well-rounded, multi-faceted look at the past, present, the future of EdTech in the US and internationally.

We started this journey back in June 2016, and we plan to continue it for many more years to come. I hope that you will join us in this discussion of the past, present and future of EdTech and lend your own insight to the issues that are discussed.
